It was a wonderful and felt like an authentic Belgian environment. The menu isn't large but does just enough to give you some options. We didn't indulge in starters but I did partake in a Raspberry wheat beer that was sweet, fruity and had a sour finish. My father and I had the chicken schnitzel. Schnitzel is one of my absolute favourite meals, unfortunately for bier huis my expectations were very high. It was OK, the chicken was a little over done and dry. This would normally be OK because schnitzel very often has plenty of mushroom sauce. This version had sauce but the portion certainly wasn't a generous one. The bier huis burger was beautiful according to the member in our party. The bun was light and the meat was thick and perfectly cooked. The fries with it (and the schnitzel) if I didn't know any better I think must have been cooked in beef dripping, they were delicious. The vegan burger came with sweet potato fries which were not cooked in beef as they were vegan, were described as absolutely perfect by my partner. One of the ordinary fries landed on the vegan plate and the staff were quick to warn us, taking the vegan element of the meal separately. The vegan burger itself was very nice but it fell apart quite easily. Cutting the burger in half to make eating it easier caused it to collapse a little. Collapsed or not it remained tasty. Waffles were large, well balanced, light and crispy with generous toppings. Our advice is to order the simple waffles and add toppings as this works out slightly cheaper. The clotted cream is not too rich and renders the squirty cream being on the menu pointless. The staff were friendly and...

Never been anywhere with such rude staff, stayed in St Ives for the weekend walked past a few times on the first day and said we would have a drink as I like Belgium beer, we never got through the door seating was busy downstairs but they have an upstairs which had two people sat drinking, the young girl came to say they had no seats available downstairs and there was only two members of staff working so we had to wait to be seated which is fair enough, I pointed out that there was people upstairs and that it was just me and my wife to which she replied if I say no then it means no which again is fair enough but the smug little attitude on the young girl was unbelievable, I then asked the older lady and she said it was the owners seated upstairs, I now wish I asked said owners to come down and explain to the gobby little madam that you don't actually speak to customers like that especially when I'd imagine that businesses in St Ives have struggled due to COVID. Hopefully the little gobby madam that's quite clearly too big for her little boots gets spoken to by the owners on how to speak to customers in future as the concept of the establishment is great and wish I'd of got the luxury of sampling a few of the Belgium...

As always, Five categories out of Five.

Atmosphere 4/5 - The classical German Bier Huis vibe is nice, quaint and friendly. The location is tucked down a side street not on the main strip but is worth seeking out.

Service 4/5 - The staff are incredibly friendly and are always on hand if you need a top up of food or drink. The bar is dog friendly and the staff will happily grab a bowl of water for any four legged companions.

Food/Drink 5/5 - Food is absolutely brilliant, a superb recreation of German cuisine with all of the usual favourites. The Vegetarian and Vegan options (yes there are options) are very generously portioned and very tasty, if a little cluttered on the plate. The beer menu is off the charts and comes across as a tad overwhelming at first. However it is worth closing your eyes and taking a leap!

Price 3/5 - Food is very reasonable for the size of portion and quality of the dishes. If you are a desert lover, the Waffles are a must! Beer can get a tad on the expensive side if you are planning a few pints, however the experience is well worth it!

Overall it is tough to fault The Bier Huis, just a few little points taking it to a 4/5. Definitely worth going...

Absolutely awful. On entry apologies were made about the 2 pigeons inside the restaurant (not their fault), we were offered a bottle of tap water which was absolutely disgusting (tasted like chlorinated pool water) and shortly after had a tray of beer spilt all over our table (accidents do happen). Prior to that spillage the table was incredibly sticky and was eventually whiped. The food was ordered and was of a quality that I would send back to the kitchen of my 2 bedroom flat (even if I was the chef) which given the prices is entirely unforgivable. I have consumed delicious Belgian food before, as had others on my table and this was NOT delicious Belgian food. The experience was so bad a round of free shots was offered and refused. My only hope is that we will all appear on a candid camera TV show one day...
