Hidden Gem with Heart, Heat, and Haddock
If you're after silver service and polished marble, move along. But if you're hungry, human, and in need of a proper sit-down and a damn good feed—The Scoff Troff Café is where it's at.
We dropped in for what was meant to be a quick bite, but what unfolded was a little pocket of calm in a chaotic world. Two teas arrived first—hot, strong, no nonsense. The kind that makes you exhale and think, Right. We’re okay now.
Then came the full English: a proper one. None of this ‘artful smear of beans’ business. This was the real deal—crispy bacon, eggs done just right, sausages that actually had flavour (imagine!), and toast you don’t have to squint to find. Comfort on a plate.
But the star of the show? The haddock chowder. Creamy, rich, and subtly smoky, it arrived like a warm hug in a bowl. Silky potatoes, tender fish, and just enough seasoning to make you sit up and go Ooh, hello. Unexpectedly sublime. One of those dishes that makes you consider ordering another to take home for later.
The place itself? Humble. Nothing flashy. But it’s cared for. Clean, cosy, and refreshingly free of pretense. You get the feeling the people here actually like feeding other people, which is rarer than it should be.
Prices? Surprisingly modest for the quality. You walk out full, satisfied, and not even slightly resentful when the bill arrives. In this day and age, that alone is enough to earn a...

The clue is in the name, "scoff troff". This is the kind of place you dream of when you're getting to the end of a marathon, or you're coming back to land from a hard day at sea. When you just want simple food delivered quickly and professionally. Culinary expertise are not really required to produce the menu, and if you're after a fine dining experience to tickle your pallette then this place isn't for you.
The meals are hearty, simple and generous. You're supporting locals and eating with locals but you're probably supporting a wholesaler rather than local farmers. But that's not always a bad thing as the meals are cheap and cost effective.
The staff are friendly and very patient, their clientele is varied from families to youth to the elderly. You'll feel welcom, here, the menu is full of standard truck stop favourites, and you'll leave full without a hole in your wallet. It does the job of a hearty cafe and it does it well, but you come here to eat not to...
Read moreAlways come here when we visit St Ives for breakfast, great choices on the menu, But... and we have been working through the breakfast menu on each visit, have actually had the Avo on toast before which is delicious, this morning was a little different, instead of the avocado smashed and on the toast with the poached eggs, cress and cherry tomatoes on top, the Avocado had been cut in half and just placed on the plate, I am aware it's easy enough to smash myself and place on my toast, but wondered why this was the case? Maybe cutting costs as when I took the other ingredients off my toast to then put the smashed Avocado on, it did only cover half of the toast, it would normally cover all of the slice, my husband ordered the Posh Eggs, which is Avocado and scrambled eggs on toast, he had obviously the other half of the avocado on his plate, and again normally smashed. Apart from this very small issue, amazing place, amazing staff and amazing food, please start smashing your avocado's...
