Been meaning to try Hub for a while as frequent St.Ives a few times every year.
Booked in advance for a late afternoon lunch and table was ready on time, excellent seating on the upper balcony with fantastic view of the harbour.
Seemed to wait a little longer than usual to place orders, 10-15 mins after being seated. Had already decided on mains, and ordered along with the drinks. Since it is a heatwave this weekend and we were already very hot from walking about, I also requested some water be brought to the table.
We didn't see anyone for the next 20-30 minutes. At 30 mins from sitting down, partner asked a passing waiter about the drinks which were brought out by the same person 5 minutes later. Food came at 45 minutes in by the same person again, leaving us half our 90 minute time slot to finish our meal.
We both ordered All Star burgers and fries. Both sets of fries were excellent and delicious, I would recommend the sweet potato & mother clucker fries. The burgers were rather meh; patties were overcooked (dry) and even the brioche buns which looked amazing were actually disappointingly dry. We ordered Raspberry Lemonade and Passionfruit Coolers for drinks which were lovely and very refreshing. These were quickly finished.
We never received water to our table and no one came back after the food was delivered (not to see how it was, if we wanted more drinks, to clear the table, or offer us the dessert menu). I'm heavily pregnant and the lack of even some water was concerning to us both. After another 40 minutes of attempting to gain various waiters attention and no service, my partner ended up walking to the nearest till to request the bill.
Ideally, we would have liked to have ordered additional drinks and desserts with our meal but we felt quite frustrated and unwanted as customers at this point.
Overall a disappointing experience that even the fantastic view couldn't make up for. We left still thirsty and very dissatisfied.
Not sure if this was a problem with the young blonde waitress that originally took our order or a general lack of organization on the...
Read moreWent in for a breakfast with our dogs for 7 of us and dogs. The place takes dogs but upon sitting down there was a comment of "you didn't say it was with 4 dogs", we asked if this was still okay as there was only 3 other tables in the restaurant the guy said yes so all good. Placed the order received our drinks from a lovely waitress who also gave some water bowels for the doggies which were much appreciated. Our breakfasts took a long time however, over an hour to arrive by this point it was now lunch time. My sis in law asked if our order had been mislaid as there were other tables receiving there food but was told "no not forgotten it'll be out when ready" and that was that. No apology no explanation which was a little odd. We had finished our drinks but ordered some more to go with the food when it did arrive, the drinks arrived promptly. When the waiter was handing out the food he made a few comments which we thought were a little uncalled for. "You ordered custom made food so it takes longer to make have a bit of patience" the only custom thing we had was my sis in law asked for a veggie breakfast but asked for a sausage with it not sure how that equates to over an hour wait but sure. We awkwardly apologised looking back not sure why we did but think it's just the British thing we do automatically! When he handed my sister in law her breakfast he then said "oh I guessed this would have been yours the fussy one" basically insuinating she was a 'Karen'. We found this so rude considering we didn't complain once and only asked where our breakfasts were after over an hour wait, which isn't an unreasonable request. We also came here before months ago, and the wait was bad then but just thought we'd give the benefit of the doubt as maybe due to staffing or being busy. But like I said there were only 4 other tables and they too were wondering where their food was. The breakfast was lovely, the toast was burnt but everything else lovely. Again the girl...
Read moreWe went on a relatively quiet late lunch, no more than 10 tables full in a very large restaurant. After 25 minutes without one of the five servers that were working asking us for a drinks order, I approached the till to ask for an order, in which I was told it was all table service. After another five minutes we places our food and drinks order. We didn’t receive the tap water we order, and when it eventually arrived at the table, one of the glasses was dirty.
Whilst waiting for our food, a walk-in was sat next to us, on a table that was still dirty with plates and glasses from previous customers. One server lifted the dirty plates off their table, placed them onto our table before proceeding to clean them table. I asked the server to re-clean our table to a disgruntled response.
We were sat on the within sight on the pass, where we could see our food sat there, without a heat lamp for five minutes, next to a server and chef having a seeming casual conversation. When the food eventually arrived at our table, the chips were cold, burger luke warm, and Mussels inedible.
When we were half way though our disappointing meal the server came over, and asked if we had finished, whilst my girlfriend was still eating her burger.
When it came to pay, I raised my concerns in the poor service and wait times to which we were told it was busy, though I beg to differ at 14:30 on a Monday.
As a local I was extremely disappointed by the lack of care and service. I can recommend plenty of good high quality food and service in St Ives and Cornwall, but The Hub doesn’t come close. Management need to take a duty of care to train staff in simple service etiquette. We won’t be returning to The Hub, nor their other branches across...
