Danielle’s Bistro is one of those rare gems of a restaurant that completely exceeds your expectations. The rustic charm of the interior, attentive friendly service, simple yet exceptionally delicious food make for an extremely pleasant dining experience. We heartily recommend a visit to Danielle’s.
When my wife suggested we try this restaurant I was somewhat skeptical. While the reviews were very good, there was something about the prices, menu design, website, and social media photos that made me question our decision. But fear not, my apprehension was entirely incorrect. The restaurant was quiet, with a few tables occupied, but it soon became apparent that we were the last to arrive at 7.30pm on a Tuesday. The greeting was friendly and we were quickly shown to our table.
Danielle’s serves a predominantly set menu offering two courses for £20 or three for £24, with a good selection to choose from. You can also order starters, mains, and desserts that attract a small supplementary charge. This makes the menu quite extensive without being overly complex.
Service was warm, friendly, and efficient. The staff checked that we had everything we needed, gave us time to peruse the menu, and quickly took our order. I went with the slow braised beef and shallots with red wine sauce, while Emma chose the crispy duck leg with orange and cointreau sauce. The prompt arrival of our drinks gave us time to relax and discuss our day while we waited for our food.
After a short wait the food arrived on plates (#PlatesNotSlates) with a side of vegetables in their own ramekins. The beef was tender and meaty, falling apart with no effort whatsoever. The red wine sauce was a deep dark colour with a rich and full bodied flavour. Smooth and creamy mashed potato was just the right consistency and overall the dish was hearty and homely. Vegetables had bite and provided a welcome splash of colour to the ensemble.
For dessert we chose to order from the blackboard, at a £2 supplement to the set menu, and we were not disappointed. In a move that was not uncommon for us we ordered two of the same, a twice baked chocolate soufflé with chocolate orange sauce. Presented on a white plate, half dusted with cocoa powder and surrounded by alcohol infused glacé cherries, the soufflé was cooked perfectly with an ever so slightly crisp surface and almost mousse like consistency inside. When drizzled with the dark chocolate orange sauce it created a decadent combination with exactly the right level of sweetness to finish the meal.
At just over £50 with two non-alcoholic drinks, we felt that Danielle’s was exceedingly good value for money. They could have easily charged another £10 per head and we would have been equally as satisfied. This was by far the best value, tastiest, and most fulfilling restaurant experience of...
Read moreDanielle's is the perfect place for a cozy, suitably priced, and delicious meal for anyone looking for both filling and delicious portions. The menu offers a wide selection of pub/bistro classics, slightly fancier dishes and some knockout signatures, all for a comfortable price and all executed to near-perfection. You can tell that whoever designed the menu has a real understanding and appreciation for flavour combinations and textures, as well as the kitchen being able to cook them wonderfully. The drinks menu is great, with a good selection of soft and hard beverages that can accompany your meal, ask any of the very helpful, smiley and professional staff for help with drinks or anything really! The (I presume weekly or daily) blackboard dessert specials are brilliant too with dishes such as truly, melt in your mouth sticky toffee pudding or a healthy selection of ice cream and sorbet flavours. The setting and serving was brilliant with a nice wait time before the meal arrived, and a wonderful calming ambient hub-bub of chatter and music. I also noticed that they cater to the younger ones among us too and didn't see any issues with them serving kids as young as 3/4!
Currently their coronavirus measures are excellent and appropriate, with face screens, disinfectants and...
Read moreWent here for the first time yesterday lunchtime, having seen it highly recommended, and with some excellent reviews - and all fully justified. The nice, cosy atmosphere & decor strikes you as soon as you walk in. The set lunch menu has more options than in many restaurants, with a lot of additional choices available for a supplement - but we were happy to choose from the main menu. The food was really good (my pork medallions & black pudding in peppercorn sauce, and my wife's cheese & leek souffle, were both excellent), served promptly but without being rushed, our waitress was friendly and attentive, and it was very good value indeed. Not quite sure how we've never come across Danielle's Bistro in all these years of visiting Hexham, but now we have we'll definitely be back (I've got my eye on the grilled tilapia for next time, a fish I'd never heard of until seeing it on the menu!). Definitely...
