I have to start by saying that I'm not a fan of tea rooms. My recent visit here did nothing to convert me. Nothing particularly bad about this place but nothing either that made me change my view. I'll start with decoration and will say that I actually prefer 'Ye Olde Tea Shoppe' decor to the colourful 'modern' look here. A Rat Pack tape loop at one time was entertaining, I now just find it irritating. Service was friendly and efficient and indeed all of the venue was very clean. Also on a positive note the tomato and pepper soup was very good indeed. No hesitation in recommending that. My disappointment (in Cheddar!) was the cheese board. The cheese was too cold. There was plain cheddar, a smoked cheese and a hard mild blue cheese. The latter two may have been cheddar variants but very unremarkable. The dish was served with two types of chutney, indistinguishable in taste because they were almost entirely sugar. Crackers were also very unexeptional. The mini salad and dressing was good though. Minor point but for a venue which 'sources locally' we were served Irish butter, again too cold and hard, in small folded 'silver paper' packs. BTW nothing wrong with Irish butter but clearly not local. Anyhow that's me, the tea shop seemed popular so for sure it pleases many,

Lovely place, beautiful flower baskets in the garden. We visited of Friday afternoon so it wasn't busy. We ordered some drinks, salad, cheese on toast and avocado brunch. Salad was nice, extra egg & ham, nothing wrong with it. My "local mature cheddar" on toast was not "grilled to perfection" - it was grated cheese that did not melt properly, so under the top slightly grilled layer I just got cold grated cheese. But the worst was "avocado brunch" served to my friend. First of all, she asked for onions on the side - onions came on top of avocado. OK, she just removed it. But then she tried "smashed avocado". It was off. All three of us tasted it and it was definitely off. She sent it back and had to wait for cheese on toast she ordered instead. Comes to paying, my friend asked if her cheese on toast was comped as she first got served the meal that was off. It wasn't. The girl at the cash register went away for a good while to ask someone if she could comp it. Finally it got comped. But when we paid and asked for a copy of the actual bill, we could not get it as the girl closed the check on the till already. I find it always a very poor practice not to give a bill to a customer first so they could check it. All in all, I will not go back there.

I came to Lion Rock Tea Rooms as me and my partner were in the area and we looked up afternoon tea and the Lion Rock Tea Rooms had some great reviews so we gave it a try and we were not disappointed. I had the traditional afternoon tea with 2 scones, 1 plain and 1 fruit and the scones were freshly made as they were still warm and absolutely delicious. Usually scones are quite filling and sometimes hard to eat 2 but these scones were light as a feather and to die for. The cream and jam was delicious and so was the tea (you get the option of coffee). I also had pimms as it was sunny which was well made and had lots of fruit. We sat upstairs, outside in their lovely little garden that had lots of flowers growing. This is a tea room definitely worth visiting if you are in the area and you may need to book when everything gets back to normal. I would also like to add that Lion Rock Tea Rooms has been voted best tea rooms in Somerset and has been certified as one of the best tea rooms in the United Kingdom.

Absolutely offended by Lion Rock Tea Rooms. We were a family of four and wanted just some cake slices. We were informed that the only available garden table seated four and was in full sunlight, and we would be more comfortable indoors. We agreed to an indoor table instead but then seemed to be overlooked. Meanwhile, a family of four was guided to a table outside without a any mention of the table in direct sunlight. Subsequently, we managed to catch the eye of another staff member and proceeded to make our order. As more individuals arrived, they too were guided towards the garden area. My partner opted to explore this space and reported back that a spacious canopy covered the outdoor seating, which offered a more agreeable atmosphere. Regardless, our primary aim was to indulge in some cake before continuing with further caving and hiking activities. After waiting for 15-20 minutes and observing other patrons being served and guided to the garden, we did begin to feel quite neglected and uneasy. We inquired as to whether there would be a significant further delay in serving our cakes. We grew tired of waiting and decided to depart. I'm compelled to write this review because the service we encountered occupied my thoughts all weekend. As an Asian family, we were taken aback by our experience. Our entire day at Cheddar Gorge was incredible, with tourists and staff being extremely helpful and welcoming. However, there was one incident that marred our visit. I believe the cafe might justify their actions by claiming they were busy and that such an incident did not occur. Hence, it would imply that the family of four who ALSO departed must have misconstrued...

What an amazing place to stop for food, snacks, or just tea & cake. From the friendly greeting & being shown to our table on the terrace, the whole feel of the place is comforting, as from the outside it looks to be a small building, but there are tables on the ground & first floor, plus the terrace which is a real sun trap & gets very busy in those sunny days.

It's all table service which is both easier & most pleasant as the young person taking our order was helpful & informative as we were looking to adapt our order for Gluten Free & Vegan. With no real time delay we enjoyed our choices of cream teas, cakes, tea, coffee & hot chocolate, no food was wasted or left by us, as there was no faults or complaints with our visit.

We are planning to go back again real soon for breakfast & I am sure a cheeky slice of cake or two as the dessert display is most dangerous on your eyes, taste buds & definitely the waistline, oh well life is too short to not enjoy cake.

Thanks to the full team working during our visit.

27/06/25 Today is our returning visit, I am sure of many more. After a long walk around Cheddar, you just have to stop for a break, maybe a cream tea, which we did today, with one of which needed to be Gluten Free. Another amazing visit for some excellent food, & what a great, warm, welcoming & friendly staff team they were again.

A big Thank You.

13/07/25 : Another visit & a great meal. Today was for breakfast, a full breakfast which I fully enjoyed, the flavours were amazing, I can not fault this place. Another great visit & I am positive that we will return again...

We had pre-booked afternoon tea for four, we arrived about fifteen minutes early but were shown to our table straight away, our order was taken and after about ten minutes our pot of tea for four arrived, the tea was very nice and we had all soon drunk our first cup, we went to refill and have a second cup but there was only enough for a further two cups so we asked for a top up and some more milk, this arrived but still no sign of our food, after about forty five minutes it arrived although our tea was now only luke warm. The sandwiches, cakes and scones were lovely and we had had a very nice experience, we finished up, left a tip and left. The experience was then sadly marred by a phone call we received about an hour or so later saying we had not paid for the refill and insisted that we went on line and paid £11 for the additional pot of tea of which there was no mention of charge at the time and which, had the food arrived promptly and the original pot had sufficient tea in for two cups each, which I do not feel is unreasonable, we would not have required. I feel staggered that as a gesture for the slow service this was not just given as part of the package and as we have all been to other establishments for afternoon tea were a free refill is the norm. I for one will not be rushing back if this is the way they treat...
