Booked a table for a birthday meal here at Miller and Carter Crewe. This was our first time here at a Miller and Carter restaurant. Overall the meal was a great experience, the staff were warmly welcoming, polite and extremely attentive throughout the evening.
We had to take a lot of time deliberating over the menu as there are many good choices of food to appeal to every palate - we settled for calamari and cheesy garlic bread. The calamari was some of the better I've had when eating out, and paired with the lemon aioli made for a light and delicious starter that was perfectly paired with the complementary glass of wine the table received as a gift for the birthday occasion. The garlic bread was excellent; fresh and crisp bread with a generous amount of cheese, it was wonderfully garlicky and delicious. Our starters also flew out of the kitchen and were with us a mere 5 minutes after ordering!
Overall the steak is of high quality, but not the best I have had, but by no means the worst. We ordered a sharing block which allowed us to sample the Ribeye, Sirloin and Fillet Mignon cuts (as well as some bbq ribs) Our ribeye was cooked closer to a well done cook rather than the medium we asked for, however it was still delicious despite this - and when we mentioned this to the waiting staff as our plates were cleared, they quickly informed the manager who promptly offered us a round of complimentary drinks.
This certainly wasn't expected as we demolished those steaks and they were still absolutely delicious, but was a great example of good customer service and understanding. We were very appreciative of the gesture as we did not complain, just mentioned it in passing.
I would perhaps say the chefs are a little over zealous with the cooks on the steaks as the rare fillet mignon we ordered was closer to a medium-rare and the medium sirloin was closer to a medium-well, so I would suggest ordering your steaks at the cook level below what you would normally like (order blue for rare, rare for medium-well etc.) This would be my only reason for dropping the 5th star in the review, but this would not rule out me coming back for another meal here or at a other M&C location.
I found the additional offerings that came with our steaks (lettuce wedge and the onion loaf) highly unique and added an extra layer of panache to our experience, the buttermilk ranch dressing was excellent and the onion loaf was delicious and not quite like anything I have had before, it was a great accompaniment to our meal.
Our meal was finished with an espresso tiramisu to share (no picture because it was too delicious to wait for that!) It was an exemplary finish to the meal, a perfect balance of sweet and bitter flavours and a light dessert to finish with.
I would come back here in a heartbeat given the service, as the staff were excellent and genuinely seemed happy to be working there, it certainly makes for a much better atmosphere. Nothing seems too much to ask and they genuinely care about providing a good experience.
Thank you for making making my birthday meal a memorable one. I certainly look forward to...

If you enjoy good food served with a side of utter chaos, Miller & Carter Crewe is the place for you.
My wife and I visited for my birthday, armed with a £100 gift voucher and high hopes. We ordered The Ultimate Experience—a 28oz Côte de Boeuf, Lobster Tail, bacon macaroni, greens, and a bottle of Malbec. Sounds simple, right? Not quite.
Our server, bless him, had no idea what was on the menu. He asked which wine we’d like (despite Malbec being the only option), then which steak we wanted (despite there only being one choice). He even asked my wife to pick a steak—despite this being a sharing dish. When I asked if he actually knew the menu, he told me “It’s not on my iPad.” Confidence inspiring.
After much confusion about sides and sauces, the meal arrived… minus the lobster. A quick reminder, and 15 minutes later, the lobster finally made an appearance. A real surf-and-turf experience—just in separate sittings.
The steak was well-cooked, though 25% of it was gristle and cartilage. Luckily, my dog had a great meal when we got home.
Then came the finale. The bill arrived at £126.95—odd, given that our meal was only £100 covered by the gift card. Turns out, we’d been charged for three desserts. Not ours. Once corrected, we paid with the voucher and left.
Or tried to.
The manager chased us on leaving to say we hadn’t paid. I assured him we had—with the gift card.
“No, you still owe £1 for the chunky chip upgrade.”
Ah, yes. The “Ultimate Experience” apparently doesn’t include chunky chips, despite being explicitly told otherwise.
The best part? The transaction fee on my £1 card payment probably cost them 50p.
Final Thoughts
This wasn’t about the £1. It was about a completely disorganized service, forgotten food, menu confusion, and a finale so ridiculous, I half expected a hidden camera crew to jump out.
If you like good food with a touch of comedy, this is your spot. If you prefer a restaurant that actually knows its own menu, maybe try elsewhere.
⭐☆☆☆☆ – One star....
Read moreLovely steak, lovely atmosphere and surroundings, attentive staff.
Great to know we’ve got a posh date night place on our doorstep
This is a 5 star review, my points below shouldn’t deter anyone, Miller and Carter know how to cook steaks and the Crewe restaurant is no exception.
Will be booking in for birthdays and celebrations from now on
Few points
Beef in the Yorkshire puddings was really cold (wasn’t sure if it was supposed to be or not so was a bit embarrassed to ask, if it isn’t supposed to be hot I’d suggest letting it get to room temperature as this was very chilled)
The sauces accompanying the steak were very small, maybe an inch, much less than other Miller and Carters (however I feel like if I’d asked for more they probably would have obliged)
Partner asked for no chips, waitress went through a few alternatives, partner opted for side salad instead, it didn’t turn up. We didn’t follow up as it could have been a language communication thing
My view was of a lot of staff standing around waiting for customers to come, chatting looking bored, stretching, on phones- maybe it was just my unlucky seat that was facing reception- again the staff were all lovely I guess Miller and Carter sets higher standards is all.
Can’t wait to come...
