I’m incredibly disappointed with the experience we had at O’Neills during the Women’s Euros. After seeing extensive advertising promoting the bar as a venue for watching the tournament, we were hopeful that it would be a welcoming and inclusive environment where women could enjoy the games together.
For the first two matches, although some men made unpleasant comments toward us, we chose to ignore them and focus on enjoying the matches. The games were shown on the big screens with commentary (though we had to ask staff more than once to turn the commentary on). Despite those hiccups, we managed to have a good time.
However, our experience during the semi-final tonight was deeply upsetting. When we arrived, we were rudely told that the England v Italy match would only be shown on small screens tucked away at the back of the bar. Instead, the main screen — with full commentary — was reserved for the men’s Rangers v Panathinaikos game, part of the second qualifying round of the Champions League. This was being watched by just one man, while around 50 women had come specifically to support the Lionesses in a major semi-final.
When we respectfully asked the manager to reconsider, we were met with hostility and aggression. It was incredibly disheartening. Not only were our requests dismissed, but the tone in which we were spoken to made us feel unwelcome and diminished. The message was clear: despite the marketing, our presence and support for the women’s game simply didn’t matter.
To make matters worse, when we experienced heckling from some male patrons, we didn’t feel safe or supported enough to raise it with the staff — who had already made it clear where their priorities lie.
In 2025, this kind of treatment should not still be happening. Women should be able to watch and celebrate sport in public spaces without being made to feel like an inconvenience. We expected better from O’Neills and were left feeling unwelcome, unsupported, and frankly, discriminated against.
I’ll be sharing this experience with women’s networks across the local area. O’Neills is not currently a safe or respectful environment for women to enjoy sport and socialise, and we’ll be looking elsewhere to watch the...
Read moreO’Neill’s Maidenhead is not a safe or inclusive venue for watching women’s sport.
Despite heavy advertising the Women’s Euros, we were told by staff that commentary wouldn’t be played in the main bar area and were instead asked to move to a corner. This felt like a clear message: women’s sport isn’t valued here in the same way.
We’ve previously had good experiences at O’Neill’s during the tournament, so we were shocked by the manager’s hostile attitude. Even members of the bar staff acknowledged the decision was unfair especially considering the crowd watching the England game far outnumbered those watching the men’s Rangers match. The atmosphere was incredible when England equalised in the 89th minute. Unfortunately, the manager responded to this moment with unnecessary aggression. A glass accidentally broke in the celebration, and rather than manage the situation calmly, he charged around the bar. I had to stop him to explain it was an accident, apologise, and offer to help clean up. I doubt a similar reaction would’ve occurred during a men’s game.
We’ve also experienced heckling from other customers during previous matches, which left us feeling uncomfortable and unsafe. We didn’t feel confident enough to raise it at the time which speaks volumes.
O’Neill’s needs to seriously reflect on how they treat supporters of women’s sport and take action to ensure a safe, inclusive, and respectful space for all fans regardless of gender or what game they’re there to watch. If this had been the men’s semi-final, the response would have been...

So after parking in a nearby Car park I first headed into the The Hoppy Place bar for a pint then I headed on to Stripes Sport bar at Maidenhead United stadium which is a fan bar then I headed on to O'Neil's bar for a quick pint.
So I headed into O'Neils as it was near the away end the bar wasn't overly busy but the atmosphere was ok as it started to fill up with us Oldham Athletic fans, Polite and friendly staff, Bar was clean, Toilets were clean, Great pint and you can order drink or food to your table through the app or QR code on top of the menu and your table number is on your table and you can
I didn't order food but great menu and something for everyone and saw the food coming out of the kitchen and the food looked and smelled amazing and the food was well presented and it was a cracking pint.
