On entering my room, I sat down on the single bed and the mattress literally sank in to a hole in the middle, I lifted the covers and the mattress was all stained and collapsed in the middle. I looked around the room and it seemed it had not had a good clean for a long time as there was thick dust everywhere and the carpets looked like they needed a good hoover. There was marks up the walls next to the bed and cob webs above (quite close to headboard). The bathroom fan was working over time and I'm not surprised as it was covered in a years worth of dirt and this was right next to the toilet, so dust being blown on to you as you sat. The bathroom floor looked like it needed a good cleaning too. Not worth looking in the bathroom mirrors as you could see nothing, too dirty. The TV remote would ot work and on turning TV on by manually, there was only 1 station you could get. Water was left in the kettle, so, do not know how long that had been there. My mattress was changed after I complained but it was not much better, still sunk in the middle. The room was given a lick with a duster but the cleaner must not like cobwebs, as these were left. The bathroom was not touched. The staff also left my flat door unlocked even though my belongings were in there. No one came to see me after all this happened to see if all was ok and I went looking for a member of staff in the early hours of the morning to complain about the 2nd mattress but no one was to be found. I had to find another hotel to go to as I could not sleep on that mattress. I have stayed at this accommodation before which is why I went there and previous experiences were good but certainly not this time. I suggest the accommodation has a re decoration to update there property and...
Read moreWe stayed here for one night (family room, a double bed, a single futon bed plus roll-out bed.
First things first: the hotel experience was great! Clean, temperature control with a large electric radiator on the wall (set your your own temperature, in Celsius). Dampened colours ( "golden-beige" wallpaper,, dark carpet, warm floor in the ensuite shower/toilet, the marine themed non-papered walls.
Beware: no bathtub if it matters to you. No shampoo or shower gel is provided: BYOB!:). The roll out bed is best for someone 2 large suitcases.
Another important point: parking is very limited. BUT it is on an A road which is also not very busy!, easy access by car but no noise pollution really.
You are also given a key to the outside door, so you can come in and out whenever you feel like. Downside: both keys are actual turn-in-the-lock keys, and we got only one copy of those. OTOH, we didn't ask for another.
Food portions were big (especially by British standards), burgers were good. I had brunch at 9 pm:). My only complaint: eggs & the baked beans were soaking drenched in oil, no mushrooms, hash browns or tomatoes. Chips were great.
Continental breakfast - available if you must leave earlier than full English is served at 8 am - is left by your door the night before, after 10 pm. That was a disappointment: a large croissant, a 25 g butter pack, some strawberry jam in a tiny sause paper cup, plus a Müeller corner pack ours were white & black chocolate pieces). No hardboiled eggs, even. My problem with that was I have Insulin-dependent diabetes, and this was all nearly pure carbs. So, minus one...

The highlight of our stay was the Sunday roast and dessert served at the Old Bell. The roast was cooked to perfection, with succulent meat and flavorful accompaniments. The dessert was a heavenly treat, indulging our taste buds with its delectable flavors.
If there is one small suggestion, it would be to make the beef steak a bit more tender. Other than that, everything was fantastic.
We highly recommend the Old Bell to anyone visiting Shrewsbury. With its charming ambiance, exceptional service from Simon, and outstanding Sunday roast and dessert, it's an excellent choice for a delightful stay. We can't wait to return...
