"Always tasty and nice big fish!" 5*. Was my original review, from years ago.
Google popped up and asked if anything had changed.
It has. The fish is small to medium, the portions of chips were always on the smaller side, now they're small. But the thing is the portions haven't just shrunk by what I'd estimate at 40%, the prices have shot right up.
The heating was off and it was chilly inside.
£10.80 for a fish, chips, peas and gravy.. sounded ok (and better value than just the fish and chips at about £9.40, even if they have shrunk). "Can you put the gravy on the side, maybe in a separate tray or something?" I asked, I wasn't expecting a whole portion, just what I would have got originally.. "Yes", next thing the buttons on the till are being pressed "That'll be £2.60 extra".
In the end, we didn't take the almost three quid upcharge for having the ladle of gravy on the side instead of over the chips, but still spent £17 on a small portion of fish and chips with peas (and had to buy the pot of gravy on the side) to share with two cans of diet coke and a bread roll. It wasn't much more than a meal for one.
I know it's 2022, alot of places have shrunk sizes and kept prices the same, either that or put the price up. Some places might have turned the heating down. Here, they've done it all.
Parkagte Chippy used to be great, if a little on the more expensive side. Things have changed. It is however,...
Read moreThe food tastes great but is extremely overpriced for the small portion you get, first time around my partner got fish chips half mushy peas & half curry £12, I got the kids portion fish and chips £6.80 and asked for some beans which was £2.60, total £21.40. we went again today ordered the same thing but this time I asked for the kids portion of fish and chips with mushy peas and swap them for beans which I wasn’t informed there would be an additional cost for swapping an item (didn’t think I would get charged for swapping as all the side pots bar curry are priced the same)I got charged 60p for the smallest portion of beans on top of my food I’ve ever seen, at least last time it came in a container and I actually left quite abit as it was a big portion of beans compared to this time around, we also felt the portion of food we got this time around was a lot smaller, my chips almost felt halved and even my partner agreed the fish looked smaller, not sure why there was price differences in both visits but due to the menu being overpriced for what you get albeit tastes great we won’t visit again due to the ambiguity of how much things cost (it’s displayed as a set price but charged differently?) just not very consistent nor trustworthy. I also left feeling hungry which I didn’t on our first visit, really...
Read moreParkgate is a charming town on the west coast of the Wirral, and Parkgate Fish & Chips fits perfectly with its traditional local architecture, restaurant, and takeaway chip shop. The staff were friendly and efficient, with the order ready in no more than 10 minutes.
The fish and chips were satisfactory, as were the salt and pepper chips, but the homemade steak pie and chicken and mushroom pie were exceptional. They were packed with meat and thick gravy. The large sausage was also excellent, being meaty and far from cheap and cheerful.
This brings us to the prices. They were somewhat high, but considering the location and the quality of the pies and sausage, it was worth paying a bit more than you might inland.
Parking was challenging, although there are spaces along the road; it's best to arrive early or midweek.
Overall, it was a pleasant experience and I might just return for those pies.
