UPDATE CHRISTMAS 2017:- The pub management has been taken back into the hands of the brewery not a third party management company (at least for now) It certainly shows as many regulars are starting to return and things generally seem to be getting back on an even keel. Good points are no music or gaming machines but board games etc. supplied (and used regularly). Go and support the pub and its new manager/staff. Let's all hope it lasts 2 STARS ONLY DUE TO LOYALTY TO THE BUB NOT ITS OWNERS. I have been frequenting this pub for over 12 years and never has the service and beers provided been so poor. This pub has had 3 landlords/managers in the last 18 months the current one being the worst because in 6 months I have seen him twice. He is never there. I have just got back from a lunchtime drink there and of 18 pumps only 7 were available thus reinforcing rumours that they are probably not paying the brewery for the beers. how can they when there seems to be no one actually managing the place. Last week a member of staff was waiting outside at opening time plus 15 minutes as there was nobody bothered to open up and let her in. Not many staff remain and most regular drinkers have abandoned the place. Used to be packed now just a few on the evenings I go . I believe this is supposed to be run by the Pubtastic company as many of its staff from The Boot Inn at weymouth (head office) have often been brought in at times of crisis. The Porterhouse has been taken over by Claire and partner recently. The work they have done and expense to the premises brings it back to life from the dark, unloved place from before.

Being from a publican past and now work for a bank, I appreciate great beer, service and price. The cask beers on tap are generally Ringwood ( Marstons Brewery own unfortunately) Fortyniner, Razorback (Best previously) and Courage Directors. Other keg beers, lagers on tap. Also they have a very extensive menu from breakfast, coffees and homemade delights. Which they offer from early morning.

The service that Claire and team provide is second to none. Always smiling and obliging. I rate this lovely cosy pub a 5* rating.

They look 👀 after me like they look after all the patrons, with respect and care.

Perhaps a little too early to judge what impact the new managers of this pub will do, not any change from how it Wass several years ago, apart from a large range of food options. Went in as passing during a walk. Very frosty reception, I felt. Bar was blocked as all the regulars were sitting there. Made you feel like you were crashing their party. Very dark finishes to all the walls made it feel like stepping back in time. Will go in during the week and try the food to see how that goes. No indication of times that food was available.
