I had reviewed the menu online and the website is certainly worth a look. It is comprehensive and its menus can be downloaded. Bookings are made by phone and parking is available along Norwood, in Saturday market, the Georgian Quarter and free-parking for up to three hours can be found at Tesco Supermarket just across the road from Sleepers. There are breakfast, lunch and dinner menus and plenty of suitable offerings for kids. The menus are fairly extensive. Sleepers is open every day of the week and food is served until nine in the evening. The building itself is welcomingly light, colourful, warm, modern even trendy and comfortable. It attracts OAPs, families, young adults and children and I like the mix and the buzz there. Some may find the buzz a little excessive. We didn’t. The welcome was very genuine and the service cheerful, friendly brisk and efficient. It describes itself accurately as a “café bar”. Do not expect expensive, fine dining but you will receive very well-presented, tasty food at a very good price.
Notice that you place your order at the bar otherwise you may well find you are kept waiting. We chose two reasonably priced wines and were not disappointed. I had the moussaka. It came piping hot in a ceramic container with a colourful salad and garlic bread. It was really tasty with a good use of herbs and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My wife enjoyed her Caesar salad at £8.50 and one daughter described her Sleeper’s Burger at £10 as absolutely delicious. It was a good quality burger, moist with a tasty, mustard relish and accompanied by a crispy salad and great flavoured chips. My other daughter had a far eastern risotto-type of dish from the Specials at £9 but was rather disappointed. We all chose a scrumptious, salted caramel cheesecake with a jug of cream at £5 per piece and were not disappointed. The total price was £77 for four plus the tip. Now I consider that excellent value.
So please don’t expect “haute cuisine” for that you must go elsewhere. Indeed, a week earlier I paid almost double at a Beverley restaurant not too far away. If therefore you want to enjoy a meal that is tasty, served efficiently in a comfortable setting and of good value, Sleepers may well be the...
Read moreAttended here for a family celebration. So a good size group. The restaurant wasn’t overly busy initially and the atmosphere was good. Shown to our table but no explanation that I had to go to the bar to get my drinks myself. Certainly nobody came to get a drinks order. We pre ordered our food and was disappointed that it came out in stages. Some had nearly finished their main meal before other meals arrived. Not once did someone ask if the meal was ok. We on a couple of occasions had to get up and find a member of staff just to ask for cutlery. Only 2 desserts available on the menu again very poor. Of who had desserts which again only came out of the kitchen one at a time. We had to ask for spoons etc. again people finished their dessert before others got served. I know the restaurant will say that “we should have notified staff so not to leave unhappy “ but when you struggle to get a piece of cutlery or a meal, then this should be obvious that you as a business are not preforming. Or at least ask if things are okay. Over all. Below average food ( the owner needs to see the competition in Beverley, much higher standards) Service was non existent. Had the service been better then I would have been able to comment or they would be professional and notice and rectify to give a better experience to the customer. This is a very...
Read moreSunday lunch abysmal. Edible but not what you pay for. Photos do the talking. Cold beef, packet mash and veg, 1 or two potatoes if you’re lucky. Only part to rave about is the beer steins. Sloppy service for a big table, sliding the drinks over the table and ended up tipping one and didn’t bother to clean it up, half the cuttlery missing and just dumped the other half on the table for us to dish out, just lazy.
As I can’t reply back to the response to this review, as it’s trying to tarnish the reliability of it: I would like to add that things were mentioned to staff about the quality of the food but not in a complaining manner as we’re not usually the type - unless it’s a wrong meal or just purely unacceptable. It was a honest review of our experience of the food, just not up to scratch and not something i’d be proud of serving up myself. Personally, I have no complaints of the staff as we all make mistakes, and not everyone is capable of dealing with a table of 10 disappointed with their food, it would be intimidating. Take the loss of a bad day of food rather than advise me on how to go about...
