Been eating here occasionally for ages and every time I walk away disappointed. The vegetarian food is mediocre, if not plain bad. Being vege is always tricky in pubs, but I honestly think the chef has no interest/knowledge in preparing vege/vegan food.
I was hoping for improvement after the refurb so set off to try it again (fingers crossed). I Had the linguine with roasted vegetables and I cannot fully explain how wrong this dish was. The linguine had been cooked so long it looked more like tagliatelle, the cloying sweet sauce tasted fitting for a sweet and sour dish, the veg, supposedly roasted, was insipid and limp without colour, the courgettes were just awful, like they were straight out a freezer-nothing roasted about any of it. And swimming in cheap vegetable oil throughout.
The only good thing about this meal was the coconut feta, which was delicious, in fact, without this, the meal would have been inedible and pushed aside.
I've been cooking vegan and vege food for over 30 years, I would sincerely love to come over and give your cooks some tips for free, just ask. It's a shame us non meat eaters are served this slop again and again. Good cooking, vegetarian especially, is not difficult and I think the locals deserve more at the Beech Tree.
Sorry about this awful review, but it simply had to be said. The refurb looks great, the staff are lovely, the beers are always great - but the vege food needs vast improvement, I won't be back to eat.
Edit- Ok I made the mistake of going back with my Dad and sister. As you can see from the photo, skanky looking carrots and raw broccoli. We were asked if the meal was ok and told the sever, no-the veg was raw. Her response was 'but apart from that is everything...
Read moreOften seen as a posh pickup joint, and not without reason. Nestled between kirkella and Anlaby, it resides in an affluent neighbourhood, and, especially on Friday and Saturday night, it is awash with teachers, retired and otherwise, young professionals, 40 + couples and groups of well presented, well preserved ladies, as well as the occasional large family gathering. It is a large, yet cozy gastropub, with a pleasingly random collection of art, kickbacks, and a big, coal effect gas fire, open on both sides, which brings a magnificent warmth to those long dark autumnal evenings. The food is excellent quality, a small dessert menu, yet with enough naughty food to make even the toughest diabetic quake in Their boots. In point of fact I had to take Insulin after just looking at the menu. There are the usual attractions, quiz nights, carveries, discounts, cocktails 2 for one. It is part of a. Ember Inns chain, but has a unique flavour, which does it credit. One caveat, for those wanting a quiet rendesvous, stay away from the weekend evenings, when it's best to book a table, even for just 2. Very popular, all round excellent value for money, please pop by, but do book if it's an evening around the...
Read moreTerrible, food was awful. Microwave frozen food and the meat was inedible. It disintegrated in your mouth. I was looking forward to this meal and at £9.79 I expected better. It obviously just comes as you see it portioned, and just warmed up on a plate. I've honestly had better frozen TV dinners. It's not the fault of the staff or the kitchen workers to be honest, but how they can say they have a chef beggers belief. There is no way any of that food was cooked there, it was simply reheated. I can't think of anything nice to say about it apart from it was dealt with and I was given a full refund. The poor member of staff didn't even disagree with me, it's not fair that they have to serve this tripe. I don't know where in the board room meeting did they agree that this is acceptable food to feed the paying public. I'll never visit an Ember Inns again, the franchises are torturing our tastebuds and it's a disgrace.
This review wasn't a pop at the chef, more that I feel sorry for a chef that doesn't actually get to...
