THE HUMAN FACTOR: Half of Somerset’s Soul Lives in This Bakery. This isn't just a review of a Cornish Bakery; this is a review of a local institution where the pasties are merely the brilliant soundtrack to an even better performance. Forget your artisan sourdough and your oat milk foam—we are talking about the fundamentals done flawlessly. The coffee is strong, the Original Pasty is a textural masterpiece (that crust!), and the ambient buzz is exactly what you want when the fog rolls in. But let's cut the chase. The actual, undeniable, raw truth is that this location is essential because of the fellow who works mornings a lot. He isn't just "good staff." He's a pillar. He's the high-octane engine that turns a standard transaction into a genuine, brief moment of human connection. He remembers your ridiculous order, he somehow manages to be both totally focused and completely chill, and the sheer energy he brings to that counter is infectious. Seriously, I'm talking about the kind of genuine warmth that cuts through a rubbish Monday morning like a hot knife through butter. I come for the Steak Pasty, absolutely, but I stay (and keep coming back, religiously) because of The Human Factor. Genuinely, that fellow is half the reason I even walk through that door. Give the man a raise, a crown, or at least a permanent supply of whatever he wants from the baked goods shelf. This is five stars for the pasty, and an extra five stars for the service. Verdict: Essential pitstop. Go for the Original Pasty, but stay for the legendary...
Read moreWe visited the cafe during a visit to Clarks Village. The seating outside was spacious and cleaned quickly as people left. The queue moved slowly in the shop. Eventually the server asked me what I wanted. I relayed my hot drinks to her, but before I could verbalize my hot food order she grumpily said "they do that there" and pointed to the till area and without eye contact moved onto the next customer. I was left speechless and I thought "how rude" and made the decision to have the drinks and go elsewhere for food. The wait for the drinks was reasonable. These were hand crafted and delicious. Incredible coffee but poor front-of-house service at the beginning of my experience here. Looked very inviting and welcoming on the outside but poor customer service. Everyone has off days and this may well explain the poor service I received. With many coffee and cafe choices in the Village there are always alternatives...
Read moreThe bakery was very busy and there were no vacant tables inside. All the outside seating was empty because the tables were still wet. As it was not raining and had been dry for a good few hours, none of the staff thought to dry the tables. I had to ask for a table to be wiped dry, which was done very half-heartedly. The cup of coffee was small and not sufficient for my thirst. Shoppers get thirsty, and that's why there are so many coffee and beverage places among shopping malls and outlets. With more and more people shopping online, highstreets need to keep customers happy. The actual pasty had some gristle in it, but the rest of...
