Brief edit in light of owner response (thank you): TL;DR Room clean and tidy, nice view. Busy on Sunday night with karaoke and lots of chatty locals. Breakfast served only after 0830. Owner inexplicably and spectacularly rude to paying guest, which unfortunately tainted my entire experience. On a day with easier timings, and fewer offensive retorts it could be a lovely place to stay.
Original review (unedited): An interesting one. Staying one night for a work visit the next morning. Booked a pub room here, with a sea view, hoping for a meal and a pint, and breakfast the next morning. I arrived on Sunday night at 8pm. As I walked in I revised my plans, the karaoke was in full swing and the place was loud and packed. No big deal, but it felt like a private function (it wasn't, just locals and Butlins guests). Took 10 mins to get the attention of a member of staff at the busy bar to ask about check-in, and another short while to actually meet the owner (Danny?). Danny was drunk, or surprised that I turned up, or both, or just appeared that way. He wrote a handwritten note for a wifi code, told me he wouldn't serve breakfast early enough for me (I wanted to leave for my visit at 0830), said that he hoped I wasn't looking for a quiet night and told the chef to show me up to a room. The chef couldn't find a light switch on the way, or indeed find the room at first. The wifi code didn't work.
I abandoned the plan to order food, but went back down to get a pint and check the wifi code. Got the pint halfway through the fourth rendition of Take Me Home Country Road and asked Danny about the code. He said "Didn't you f**king listen" I explained that though I had listened, I must have misunderstood him. His partner (Collette?) appeared at this point (having ignored me while I'd been waiting at the bar earlier) to ask "Why he fking needs the wifi code, he's only here one fking night" I directed my attention back to Danny who pointed at the code he'd written down earlier. "It's that". I pointed out it didn't work. "All lower case" (it was written in all caps) I explained I'd tried that. "No spaces" (it was written with many spaces) I looked at him and further suggested that I didn't really want to pay for my pre-booked breakfast that he wasn't going to serve me in the morning. I suggested he didn't charge me for my pint and we'd call it even. "We can't do that sort of thing" Then he wandered off. I waved a tenner for my pint at the other bar staff member, who explained that Danny was probably discussing the matter with his wife. None of them spoke to me ever again.
I finished my pint sitting at the bar to the sound of the locals yelling "take me hoooome", then eventually went upstairs to find some headphones and a soundtrack that would blend with John Denver on repeat from downstairs.
The bed was clean, and the shower worked. I left at 0815 and went to McDonalds.
Final edit: apologies to Collette for assuming she was...
Read moreThis was not our first choice, but Foxes Hotel was closed for a private function; so we kept walking down the Esplanade to this establishment. The table we chose was dirty, even though nobody else was in the dining area and not busy in the bar; so not like they were overwhelmed. I shouldâve taken that as foreshadowing, but my disabled daughter and I stayed and the table was cleaned promptly. When I went to order food, landlady said she was going to give the order to the kitchen, and then would take the drink order from our table. I thought that was strange, but went back to table. She came and got me to return to bar to order drinks and pay. I told her I thought she said she would take our drinks order from the table, but perhaps I misheard or she misspoke. Instead of being a mature adult and apologising for the misunderstanding, she rudely insisted she never said that, twice. Another indicator we shouldâve left. Food came out incredibly fast, which is not indicative of fresh and well prepared food. It was edible, but not particularly good. I ordered a side salad, but the appetisers came with salad, which she couldâve told me when ordering. When clearing the table, she asked if everything was ok, and I said the squid wasnât prepared properly, and the chewy inedible membrane wasnât removed. Again, instead of being a mature adult and apologising that we didnât enjoy it, she got chippy and said itâs squid and not calamari, implying thatâs normal. I let her know Iâve prepared squid many times, and I know it should be removed (although many places donât prepare it properly, to be fair). She said weâre obviously not going to agree. Thatâs true! Really, there are so many good places to eat in Minehead, you donât need to go there. Iâm adding an edit now, as I see the landlady has replied. As expected, confrontational and rude, not apologetic that we had a bad experience. We only ordered appetisers, chips, and salad for lunch; so not surprising we cleared plates (except for the uneaten squid membraneđ¤˘). As a graduate of Foxes, my daughter actually wanted to leave when she saw the dirty tables; but I persuaded her to give them a chance. I see the place is for sale, and look forward to returning when under...
Read moreHad a lovely lunch today. On arrival, we had a slightly frosty welcome from a lady at the bar. We had our two dogs with us and asked if it's OK to bring them in, we got told yes as long as they aren't wet, fair comment but at least look at us not talking to us with your back turned. To that, we took a seat. No menus but a huge blackboard with a good selection of starters, mains, and puddings. While deciding what we wanted, we had to listen to the lady having a heated conversation with their wholesaler about a drinks order and another heated conversation about some lost keys. I went for the fish and chips with peas, fish was lovely, and the batter was full of flavour and crunchy. My wife had a panini and a bowl of chips. Her bowl of chips for £3.95 and it was huge. Along side of this we had a drink each. An ale and a smirnoff ice. Only one ale on tap. Unfortunately, there is no atmosphere what so ever, the odd bit of music, and then huge long pauses of silence apart from us talking. Service was good. And a side note, a large family came in and asked if they can eat in the garden, but where told food can't be served outside. They seemed happy with this and decided to eat inside. However, the bar man persuaded them to go down the road to another pub with a garden where they can eat outside. It's really odd considering we were the only people in and an opportunity for some good income was encouraged to go to another pub. He wasn't rude, but as a business owner myself, I was left scratching my head. edit after the owners response. As a paying customer, I can have an opinion on what I paid for, what I brought up where valid points and you have attacked what I put and I most definitely won't be coming back maybe think about your response rather then take it to heart. I have now changed my review to 2 star from 4, as a result of your...
