*See end of review for recent update 5 stars reduced to 1 *I absolutely love this pub, every time I have been there the food has been fantastic, freshly cooked generous portions and great price. The staff are all really friendly and welcoming. The pub is clean and very pretty with lots of hanging baskets of flowers and a beautiful old fireplace. I would definitely recommend The Ship and am looking forward to my next visit. *UPDATED REVIEW *So unfortunately this review was true a year ago however we have been to the ship probably twice in the last few months and I’m very sad to say it’s gone downhill a lot, there seems to be all new staff now and non of the original staff left, the food is no where near as nice as it was before and you have to wait a really long time, me and my son waited an hour for the food when it was really quiet I think we were the only table eating on arrival then a few more tables came in but it was in no way busy. Also they didn’t have half the items on the menu and kept coming back to tell us they didn’t have this or that, my son had a sirloin steak which he asked to be cooked medium rare and it came out well done and tough, the staff are friendly but not professional and it’s badly run, the girl behind the bar didn’t tell me half the menu was missing when I said we were going to have lunch and most of the things we ordered weren’t available. It’s such a shame as we loved going to this pub as a family for meals but I won’t be going...

Having decided what to order I was informed that you didn't have strawberry puree for our chosen cocktails. Whilst placing our order for the food I was informed you didn't have fish for the fish and chips so we went with the scampi, oh and by the way, the mushy peas are normal peas as, yes that's right, you didn't have any in stock. We returned to our table and after ten or so minutes a member of staff informed us that the 2 vegetarian Katsu Curry's we're off the menu as you ran out. How can you possibly run a business if the kitchen is so poorly stocked. Our food eventually arrived approximately 50 minutes later despite the pub wasn't busy at all. The presentation of my mix grill was good however looks deceive. The chicken and gammon looked like it was pre-cooked and then microwaved. I dread to think how long my food was hanging around in the abyss because when it arrived it was stone cold. My beer which was in the sun was warmer. This experience was unacceptable beyond belief and will not be returning to your establishment again which is a great shame. Please don't bother giving an explanation or apology. You simply cannot stock your kitchen or cook food to a satisfactory...
Read moreThis is a very tough review. Originally, I was going to give 5 stars. Lovely pub with excellent service and the food came out reasonably quickly. The value is unbelievable. 2 main courses, nice portions, for £11. I started thinking this is too good to be true. We tried the hunter's chicken and the cod and they were fantastic.
We then tried the gammon steak. It was chewy and too salty, even for a gammon. I told the manager what I thought and politely asked for something else. He said that there's nothing wrong with the gammon and that basically I should eat what I had.
I again explained that I had both ordered and cooked gammon myself that wasn't so bad. His response was if I wanted a different dish I'd have to pay for it because "there was nothing wrong with the food". I returned the dish that I just had one bite and said "no thank you".
It's unfortunate that some managers won't accept negative feedback. If he had at least apologised for that one dish, he would have gotten 5 stars. I also find it unfair to give anything lower...
