The Standard — Restaurant in England

Very professional door staff, always polite on entering and leaving and open the door for you. Needs redecoration. Smacks of a dark student bar vibe. A better dance floor area and DJ stand needs to be near the dance floor, DJ was good, but unfortunately not made a feature of as he should be. Needs better pub/club combo lighting in general. Move tables from around the bar as people block the area so getting to and away from the bar is almost to the point of giving up. The potential for spilling drinks and causing a drunken incident is high. The conveniences are inconveniently up a load of stairs not good for staggering drunken clientele to negotiate without falling and causing serious injury, especially for those in high heels. Went into the Standard after a meal at The Nazar Lounge & before going to see Jimmy Carr . The Standard …. Ordered myself a double gin & lemonade ..came with melting ice & in a grubby plastic glass . I stared at it in disbelief & was asked by the bar staff “ everything ok ? “ in a abrupt tone . Also got a half a lager shandy , again in plastic . I watched it poured & bar lady kept topping up after removing froth a few times . My partner returned it & asked for another which was as bad . The Standard is a long established public house in Bedfords High street. The staff are friendly and helpful and the clientele are of all ages. The decor is cosy, with antique style furniture and furnishings. Upstairs is another seating area that leads out to a roof patio area, that is covered. During the summer the front windows are completely open and a nice cool comforting breeze gently blows in to cool you down. Of course there are various alcoholic beverages to keep you cool.
