We had planned to have an afternoon tea at this lovely little café while visiting Newbury. We decided to go for a quick lunch, a couple days before the planned afternoon tea. Well, it was a good thing we did, since we didn’t get to go back for afternoon tea…
Just as the name suggests, it is located right by the canal. It was very picturesque, peaceful and relaxing. They also have seating upstairs, and had histories on the canal, with photos posted all around the wall.
Their cakes looked amazing, but I decided not to order any dessert on this day. Yes I know, a big mistake! Our friend ordered Heavenly Hot Chocolate, and it looked so pretty! We went with Teashop House Blend Tea, and Earl Grey. The young boy who brought the teas (I hear this is a family-run business) was trying to very careful not to mix them up. But the funny thing was, he totally mixed the tea up! LOL. We didn’t realize until half way through… I thought the House Blend tea tasted so much like Earl Grey.
For lunch, we had Ham, Cheese & Chutney Sandwich and Eggs Benedict. They were both tasty, nice portion, and filling. Our friend went with something healthier, and ordered one of their vegan sandwiches. It is nice to have that option if you want or need vegan dish.
We had a nice quick lunch here. It was adorable and cozy. The food was good, not amazing, but good. I think the sweets might be better than the actual food…I will never know, unless I go back! Lesson learned: don’t never expect your plan to go just the way you planned them…and have your...
Read moreReally not impressed which is a shame because the website made it sound so appealing. By 11.45 they had run out of savoury scones All the tables outside were filthy and full of used dishes and waste food, I had to clear and wipe down my own table. We had a cream tea at £9 each which at best was average, nothing special. There is a sign that asks people not to feed the birds, which of course everybody ignores, not only that but by leaving the tables as they were it was encouraging the swans to eat off them possibly endangering their health. As I was using my milk I noticed that the inside of the jug was filthy, lots of bits stuck to the inside. We were there 45 minutes and not once did anyone attempt to clean the tables. On leaving I showed the girl the dirty milk jug, I asked if anyone was going to clean the tables to avoid feeding the swans and told her that the wall was lined with dirty dishes too. Her response!!! "Yeah we stack them out there as we don't have room for them in here". Umm, maybe if you washed them you'd have room, just a suggestion. She said someone would clean the tables. 45 minutes later on the other side of the canal I could see nothing had been cleared. Not impressed, will not return...
Read moreThis is a lovely place to visit with family, especially when the weather is as beautiful as it has been recently (May 2018).
Both outdoor and indoor seating areas are very well presented and furnished. We sat outside on the patio, which was just on the bank of the canal.
This is a great place to just sit and look over one of the more active parts of Newbury. Positioned just opposite Victoria Park, this café is often busy in good weather- so for breakfast I would recommend arriving at opening time to get one of the better tables, though you should be fine arriving at any time if you may be willing to wait.
Service is swift and helpful, and the menu has plenty of choice; catering plentifully for the vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free crowd as well.
We ordered the vegetarian breakfast, which was above average quality. Though the food, in my view, was not quite as high quality as somewhere like the Flowerpot café, it was definitely tasty and filling, and the overall atmosphere of the place more than makes...
