I my husband and I decided to have a drink but couldn't find a place to park (no problem as the surrounding area was always busy at this time). My husband dropped me off first as I needed the loo. I was met with a torrent of abuse from the barmaid for not buying a drink first. By the time I came out of the loo my husband was still not in the pub but found him outside in the car. Been coming here on & off over several years for various reasons - the "Theatre Upstairs" events, their beer festivals or just to have a relaxer or two when in the area! Pub is a "Steaming Billy" brewery pub so has their range of Real Ales plus a changing range of guest Real ales. Happily it's Traditional within the pub so a lounge and a taproom/bar plus no noisy music (nor karaoke - thank goodness!) or TVs, just conversation or contemplation according to your personal choice. It's an old pub but it's surrounding location lets it down badly, which are terraced houses that are run down and the area is overrun with university students and all types of foreign nationals. There is a park and river near by but the general area it is in is a little unsafe, I worked on building sites there and I didn't feel safe there.
