I went here as part of Heritage Sunday in Leicester. Take your kids, I saw a lot of parents teaching their children about the history of Leicester :) Heritage Sundays are the last Sunday of every month until November this year (2017), a lot of historic places are free to visit and you can get a tour if you want as well, so keep an eye out on Facebook and online.
I love museums and hadn't visited this one. It was much better than I expected, and this was mainly due to the old prison- please, if you do go, make sure you go into the cells! They were so interesting, and are right below the courtroom (Ask one of the helpful ladies at reception, the entrance is a bit tricky to find in the stand/the dock).

Bring a notepad or a paperback and sit in beautiful quietude not really available anywhere else in the city, while watching narrow boats compete against the swans on the canal.
