Friendly and comfy hotel albeit pricey for the offering Staff generally are great, really helpful and friendly. Specific thanks to the receptionist who got me a fan for my room and the lovely Galiciana in the bar and breakfast areas. The food is good and the bar is very popular with locals with loads of seating in a comfy surround. Beer at a good price.Bed was comfy too and WiFi is an excellent speed. Parking is free also.
· Room 18 again. I reviewed this room nearly 10 months ago and listed many maintenance issues outstanding. Extractor issue has been addressed. Toilet still has a problem flushing everytime,( cistern mechanism failure), the throne itself is massively cracked under the seat and has been bodged up with sealant. The toilet is located so close to the basin you have to rest your arm over it when seated.( there is space to move it sideways too) Both basin taps are marked cold which is a scalding water safety hazard. The sash window is broken and when rasied will stay so for a while but then drop down hard like a guillotine without warning and it is a surprise that all the glass doesn't shatter with the impact. ( Just needs some simple hooks to hold it open)
Good hotel generally however poor maintenance regime takes the shine off its performance, IMHO A very pleasant and comfortable hotel with a very sympathetically designed extension to the original coach house.Very helpful and hard working staff. Breakfast freshly prepared and satisfying. Excellent, safe and spacious free parking area. Great location for town centre shopping and walks next to the picturesque waterside, parks and marina area. WIFI good. Bath water pressure was excellent.
(Room 18/SINGLE) Maintenance issues, that must be known to the hotel management, were quickly evident when using the room. Sash window cord BROKEN on one side this rendering the window unable to opened safely for ventilation. The toilet bowl is BROKEN under the seat area and the crack has been smudged over with mastic to hide it. The bathroom ventilator had been switched off and it became evident when it was switched back on that it produced a blood curdling wail like a Stukka bomber as if it was about to explode into flames. It settled down but it is BROKEN. The toilet flush only worked occasionally; the handle had to be flushed upwards rather than downwards with a helpful arrow taped on the wall but it still didn't work every time. BROKEN. The basin taps are both identified as being cold taps. This is a hazard if anyone uses the one where hot water comes out unexpectedly and scalds someones hands. BROKEN.
And this seems to extend elsewhere in the hotel as my orange juice taken from a juice dispenser ended up having two sizeable sections of a perished rubber washer in it when I came to the bottom of the glass. No harm done however this equipment should be inspected after each wash. A small child would have...
Read moreMy husband & I always stay in The Red Lion Hotel in Fareham when we visit local family. We always find it easy to book a room for our stay either direct through the hotel reception or via Booking.com. We have previously either stayed in a business double room in The Stables as that has a shower or the room directly behind reception with a low level bath & over shower. These rooms have been suitable for my health needs. We have always been welcomed with a smile from the member of staff on reception. This visit was for our BIL'S funeral. We booked a room & breakfast deal direct through the hotel which was an accessible room with walk in shower which we have never stayed in. It was at the time of booking a cheaper option rather than the business double room in The Stables. Sadly we wasn't treated at reception with our usual happy smiling face which we found surprising, especially as we have always received a very warm welcome on all of our other previous visits. Our room was very spacious, which was helpful as I use a walking stick. The room decor was as always up to date, clean, tidy & inviting. We had the usual tea, coffee & kettle etc. We found it very hard to fit the large kettle under the bathroom tap to fill it upto make a hot drink. Maybe consider giving guests a slightly smaller kettle to make this simple task more easier? We found we didn't have enough milk sachets to cover our coffee's etc, so I had to ask reception for more, which they happily supplied. We found that the bathroom sink tap never ran cold. It was either luke warm or warm, even though there was a 'beware of hot water' sticker above the sink. We enjoyed our room except for two things. The bedroom door is far to heavy to open for a disabled person like myself, let alone a person in a wheelchair. The door opens outwards & a wheelchair user will seriously struggle to open the door, although it is an accessible room! The wet room floor was filthy black with usage. It needs a really good scrub, not just a mopping. I have always owned a wet room & they have to be cleaned deeply after every use or they do stain black. As we were visiting to attend our BIL'S funeral, we didn't have the energy to ask to move room after unpacking but we won't book into that room, 66, in future visits to The Red Lion Hotel, Fareham. We will pay more & stay in the business room in The Stables. Over all, our stay was nice but it could have been better. On a very positive note though, our daily breakfasts over our 2 day stay & evening meal were amazing & extremely good value, large portions & plenty of choice etc. Compliments to the chef, kitchen staff & restaurant staff. Thank you all & see you soon. Mr & Mrs Robinson 17/11/2024...
Read moreThe Red Lion in Fareham is part of the Green King chain and is an old coaching inn. Situated in the centre of town it is easy to find and has a large car park to the rear. Check in was welcoming and efficient and we were booked in quickly.||As you walk along the accommodation corridors the dull paintwork on the walls and doors are testament to the need for a long overdue refurbishment. Our room (no 64) is in the annex and is large and comfortable. Not surprisingly it is clear that the furnishings etc have been here for quite some time, which doesn’t bother me as I prefer rooms to have individual character. One problem with the furniture however is that one of the two chairs has stains on the seat cushion. I don’t know what the stains are, but I certainly didn’t want to sit on them and I would suggest that they are cleaned up.||Other than that, the room is comfortable and we slept well in the large bed. The en-suite is rather old and has a mixer tap shower fitting that is stuck on one setting - hot. At least the hotel knows about it, as they have a warning sticker on the wall saying “Caution - Hot”, which is good of them. Perhaps fitting a new tap mixer unit would be an even better idea? Just a thought.||Breakfast was served in a pleasant room and it’s clear that any limited refurb so far has been limited to the public rooms, and that is understandable. After fresh fruits, yogurt etc. we enjoyed a Full English which was substantial and nicely presented. It was also tasty, but for the life of me I can’t understand why some companies think that tinned or frozen mushrooms are a good idea.|Mushrooms aside, we enjoyed breakfast and the service was friendly and very efficient.||This was a one night stay after a ferry crossing and, as such, it did the job. This is a hotel with huge potential, and I’ve no doubt that the management and owners know this all too well. I’m sure that they also know that the issues I raised re the stained chair and the shower stuck on hot are not...
