I could write paragraphs about the meal I had here last night (and I will), but first the summary: so good!
I'd been on a long hike on the North Downs Way so I admit the resulting hunger might have contributed to my appreciation, but everything I ordered was genuinely excellent. The lamb thali was the centrepiece, including a seriously tasty black daal that I chose to scoop up with a generous side portion of aloo paratha. And I couldn't resist having a plate of steamed pork momo dumplings all to myself, too. No shame, no regrets!
Well, one regret: the photographs I took are definitely not good enough to do the food justice, so I've not included them here. Dim restaurant lighting and cheap smartphones do not mix.
I see a few previous reviewers have described the food as oily, and I can understand that - my aloo paratha in particular was quite oil-heavy from the frying process, and while that's exactly what I wanted and needed after an active day, it probably wouldn't be to everyone's taste. But basically I'd say if you go into your meal expecting it to be a little on the heavier side because of that, the flavours and textures of the dishes more than make up for that.
I've no idea when I'll be back in Folkestone, but I hope it'll involve another meal here - tasty food at very...
Read moreDisappointing! A friend recommended this place and I saw online it had good reviews. I was eating on my own today and was led to an over-heated extension at the back. (Had to adjust it myself.) Initially there was a busy table next to me, but they left after 5 mins. I was told others would be coming to the neighbouring tables, but that didn't happen and I was completely on my own. I asked for the pork chilli momos, but was told there were no pork ones, so had to have chicken instead. I also tried the puris as I like tamarind, but when it arrived I couldn't really taste tamarind much at all. When I ordered I asked for things to be mild/medium. But when the food arrived it was fiery hot. When I spoke to the waiter, he just said that Nepalese food is very spicy. (Also, the food came in 5 mins, so clearly not cooked from fresh.) I got cutlery, but no serviette - you have to hand fill the puris yourself, so this would have been useful. I'd also ordered a beer, which I desperately needed as things were so spicy, but after 5 or 10-minutes I had to go and ask for it, whilst my food got cold. I also had to request they clear the dirty table next to me, which was only ever half done. All in all it was v disappointing and I won't...
Read moreAbsolutely amazing place, highly recommend! Very vegan friendly as well, with dishes marked clearly on the menu (and although there aren't too many in comparison to the non-vegan ones, I felt very included and not like I was lacking for choice). The portions were absolutely massive, especially considering the price - there were 4 of us, and we ordered 2 starters for 2, as well as either a thali meal or two dishes each, and we really could've done without any starters (though they were absolutely delicious)! We had plenty of leftovers, and were given takeaway containers upon request. Pictured are (left to right): pork curry, egg fried rice, vegan chow mein, vegan fried momos. My mum and her partner also order the pork and lamb thali, respectively. Everything was amazing, but I personally would really recommend the Aloo Dum. You can select the spice level of almost everything. The service was also wonderful, with very attentive and friendly staff. It was very quiet when we went there (late Thursday afternoon), and we didn't have to wait at all. It was very clean (the toilets and main areas), and the staff came and offered to change our cutlery/dishes after we'd finished...
