Not good, not bad, but OK! Is it a pub or restaurant? It was our first visit, so we didn't know the protocol... There was no one greating people as they came in, so didn't know whether to seat ourselves. By the time we asked if they had room for a table 2, the staff shrugged and said "If you can find a table, yeah" I would have preferred them to say "Let me go and have a look". By which stage 2 groups had walked in and sat themselves, leaving 1 free table... Thankfully. The pub was full and there was only 1 member of staff behind the bar, leaving her thin on the ground. She knew her product knowledge of an extensive range of drinks. From what I gather you can only order and pay for drinks at the bar, so you need to get up everytime you want a drink. I would have bought more if it was table service. There were 3 other staff working. All very pleasant and relaxed. Shared a seafood platter to start. The hot smoked salmon and squid, were very tasty. I didn't like the seasoning on the whitebait much, the bread was sort of rubbery and the salads were odd. Disappointed that my steak and ale pie didn't have a pastry bottom, the potatoes were like luke warm and the 3 shriveled roasted carrots were just plonked on top of the potatoes. The pub has a funky glass foyer and the decor is exposed beams and brickwork, with lots of curiosities to look at, including photos and pictures of Folkestone and surrounding areas. I'm not sure I would visit again as my expectations did not meet the hype. If it is classified as a restaurant I would expect a greater attention to detail, someone hosting the room and better napkins than little...
Read moreWe booked a table for Sunday lunch, for a birthday treat. We have been here several times before, and we were looking forward to it. On arrival we were offered a choice of 3 tables and sat down. Nobody came near us for over 10 minutes to offer a menu or drinks. We caught the eye of a waiter, who was busy taking drink orders from people who arrived after us. Eventually our drinks arrived and I asked a second time for a jug of water, (we also had wine so were not being cheap) Our main courses arrived and although the food was of good quality, the plates were cold, and accompanying veg were stone cold. The meat and Yorkshire pud was lukewarm. A waiter arrived 10 or so minutes later and offered to take my meal to re-set it. The food came back, but the Yorkshire pud was stone cold, even to touch. The waiter offered to get another, but at this point I refused as I wanted to complete my meal at the same time as my partner. I decided not to eat it as it wasn't even luke warm. The service was poor as the lead waiter didn't come near us to apologise or explain, and the server wasn't able to correct the problem. Presumably there was a kitchen issue but no explanation for cold food offered. We were very disappointed with the poor service, attention to detail and inability to correct the errors. We have lost faith in this previously lovely restaurant and shan't rush back. Incidentally we did not ask for a reduction or extras and paid the bill in full. However we were not happy to pay discretionary service charge. They really need to improve based on our...
Read morethe interior is second to none in Folkestone, the place looks amazing and the courtyard makes you feel like you could be anywhere in Southern Europe.
The food (lunch), for the cost, is average at best and nothing special - Maybe the chef is finding his feet. Although the breakfast was way over priced.
Staff, again, hopefully just finding their feet. The blonde hair lad with the lip piercing and the younger lady behind the bar are friendly and welcoming but the others just made me feel uncomfortable, like they didn’t want customers.
A sarcastic comment when we wanted to split the bill wasn’t welcome. Then when asked by another member of staff how the food was and one of our party said “a bit greasy” the waitress said “oh” and just walked off... not even a “sorry”!
But the worst, why allow people to smoke in the courtyard? Such a shame, sure legally they have to be outside, but why does that mean the courtyard? The high walls stop any wind that might remove the smoke quickly. Frankly it ruins the courtyard for those who don’t smoke. Let’s be honest, smokers aren’t great at realising how much smoke ruins a non smokers food/experience. Apparently the decking area is smoke free. This isn’t really acceptable as it means the smokers get the nice area. Fingers crossed new laws will stop this if restaurants and pubs aren’t willing to.
Hopefully just finding it’s feet and...
