I remember Bells when it was a one room deal at the back of a terraced house in Gilesgate ... now they are getting ready to conquer the world! My wife and I had dinner, with family, at the Framwellgate emporium in Sep 2022. What can I say, large spacious premises, plenty of parking, clean with a view into the kitchens which I always like. Fish n chips ... superb ... hands down the best I have tasted. We are originally from the Durham area but have lived in the US for the last twenty years so we know what good fish n chips taste like !! We had flew into Heathrow a couple of days before, and had fish n chips at Gordon Ramsay's restaurant there. It was my pleasure to let the waitress at Bells know that Bell's fish n chips were not just better than Gordon's ... they were light years better. Highly recommended !!

Went in today. Ordered 2 haddock and chips. Started eating fish then noticed our chips were anaemic looking and some of the bad bits had not been cut out. We were told that we couldn't have any more chips but they could take both plates away to recook. All we wanted to keep eating our fish and have some fresh chips provided. The Supervisor refused saying it was not Bells policy to do that. I also asked about the black bad bits on the chips. She said that nobody would see that. I asked who was responsible for quality control but she said that that is how they are served and nobody would see the black bits if they had other chips on them. We were not offered anything so I asked for the cost of the chips to be removed from the bill. She agreed but will still paid £28 for Haddock and a pot of tea for two. Will never return. This is the second time at Finchale Rd, Arnison we have had awful service. Bells have invested hundreds of thousands of pounds to set up this place but it is quite clear it is not being managed properly. Never again.

Modern bells restaurant with ample parking and disabled access. Fish n chips is about £10 each, which isn't cheap but you'd pay similar in pubs. The fish was fresh, white and cooked really well. Chips were lightly cooked, I do prefer browner but they were still very nice. No grease and really enjoyed them. It has around 50 seats inside, consider booking as it gets busy. They sell tea, coffee and alcohol as well as didn't drink. From memory they did lazanya , sausage n chips and a few other things. Generally enjoyed it. Mum said one of the best fish meals she had had for a long time and she's very fussy

8 adults (covering 3 generations) enjoyed a great evening here, and that wasn't all down to the company. Attentive, patient staff, (nothing too much trouble) tastey food, nothing fancy but all good. Ok some items on the menu were sold out, but we did rock up at 7pm on a Friday night. Not to be recommended was the veggie curry, cold temperature and uninspired, but everyone who had traditional fish and chips style choices was well satisfied with their selections. Puddings good value, and if you like liquorice then the blackcurrant and liquorice ice cream was superb.

First time trying here. Came because they do gluten free. Ordered: Small fish & chips with peas. Gluten free chips and peas. Tea and pop. Home made peas were delicious. Fish and chips were nice plus a canny cuppa. Gluten free chips were tasty too. Gluten free vinegar is in the glass bottles. . . . A little note to vegetarian / vegans: as standard everything is cooked in beef dripping. Veg oil is available, make sure to ask upon ordering. All of the staff were very helpful and friendly and the place is clean and well looked after.
