It's always good to find a Fish Bar that cooks in beef dripping, my preferred option. I have been waiting to try this place for some time but the opening hours never seemed to coincide with my passage through Arnold. Apparently, apart from Friday and Saturday, the shop doesn't open at lunchtime. Since it is situated on the High Street and somewhat away from the 'Main Drag', footfall can be quite low. This take away is also in competition with a number of other multi ethnic restaurants offering similar priced meals and strung along the High Street. Fortunately this is not the case later in the day as the business captures an element of the commuter traffic and it has continued to feed folks for the last six years or so. The young chap who served me (owner?) is a local resident and was happy to chat about the business. He intimated that he would like to extend the hours but I suspect that this would cost more than it would generate. Whilst the chips were enjoyable enough, it may have been due to my late afternoon visit, but I was slightly under whelmed by the batter on my freshly cooked to order haddock, so regrettably, only 4 stars. Whilst perfectly crispy it was quite flat (there are a number of possible reasons for this, although I won't speculate) rather than the ridged and furrowed version beloved of celebrity chefs and so, to my mind, didn't entirely complement the fish. I don't know if this is the norm, so will warrant a return visit when possible. I would like to see details of the potatoes being fried and also the provenance of the fish. Yes, I know most don't give a monkeys about such things but the diehard element like to know. Apart from traditional fish and chips the business sells a number of other related items including pies, sausages and also kebabs (I won't hold this against them, as long as they don't expect me to buy one). Evening opening only Monday to Thursday, all day Friday and...
Read moreI have had to leave this review on my fiancee's account as I can only leave one on my own. This is the second time we have visited Arnold Traditional Fish Bar . The last time we went I had the large cod which was awesome and Sue had an equally awesome doner kebab. This time I went for the large haddock and chips and Sue had the mixed kebab. The haddock totally blew me away . Perfectly cooked, nearly two inches thick, beautiful large creamy flakes, and pure white all the way through. The only time I have ever had haddock like this is when I have been on one of my frequent visits to Whitby or York. I would happily put this on par or even above the haddock I have had in Whitby. The chips were once again awesome. Everything was cooked in proper beef dripping which enhanced the flavor even further. Sue's mixed kebab was also fantastic. She loved both the donor and the chicken tikka meats. The salad was super fresh and plentiful. We were warmly welcomed by both the owner and her son and had a great chat with them both as our food was being freshly cooked and prepared. I said this on my last review and I must say it again. We have tried many, many chip shops in our area and not one comes close to the quality and exceptional taste we have found at Arnold Traditional Fish Bar. We travel nearly 12 miles to get there and it is totally worth it. Many thanks to the staff for the fantastic service, the lovely welcome, and the exceptional food. See you next week. All the...
Read moreWe went to Arnold Traditional Fish Bar for the first time tonight. I had Large cod and chips and my fiancee had donor kebab and chips. I usually never have fish and chips at home because the I have been spoiled with fish and chips from York.I lived in York for years and visit all my friends up there every couple of weeks so that's where I have my fish and chips. In York they still fry in beef dripping and being near the coast the fish is always fresh. The only place I could find down here that fried in beef dripping was Arnold Traditional Fish bar. We drove a 24 mile round trip to try them out. We were not disappointed. The service was beyond exceptional and the staff were superb. The food was absolutely excellent. The cod was thick, flakey, and cooked perfectly. The chips were awesome. This is how fish and chips should be cooked. Sue's Kebab was also excellent.Lots of salad and everything wrapped separately for our journey home. Without doubt this is the best chip shop within a 15 mile radius of our home and we have tried many! We will be back next week and I will be trying the haddock. Many thanks to the staff once again as they...
