Outside the pub, there is a board with a menu, including homemade Chilli Con Carne. At the bottom it says “Takeaway service available”. I thought this sounded nice, and was meaning to try it for a while. One day, I finally got round doing so, and I called the pub and asked to do a takeaway order. The woman said “yeah very funny, we’re a pub” so I said that I had seen the menu outside stating “takeaway service available”. The woman denied that this is the case; I assured her that I had seen it, so she asked a colleague if there was a board which said this outside. She said no! I explained that I was puzzled by this, and then the woman said that it means that if you don’t finish a coffee you can take it away [seriously? When it says “Takeaway service available” at the bottom of a food menu! And why didn't she explain this before then?], and she said that she would do a takeaway for me on this occasion. I said that I would like to try the Chilli Con Carne, but then she said that it was not available so I would have to have pasta instead! The next day, I was passing the pub so I looked and guess what…the board was still there!
So to summarise, after thinking it looked like a nice pub and planning to takeaway their homemade Chilli Con Carne at some point [which their board outside implies is possible], I was treated like a prank caller and then told it wasn’t available. What a shame to lose a potential customer like this! Very unpleasant people...
Read moreThis is a statement on behalf of the Dun Cow Durham, as unfortunately we are unable to reply to reviews. Firstly, thank you for all the kind comments the pub has received. Sadly, it has come to our attention that a false accusation has been made regarding the pub. Within further investigation we can see this person has also written the same review on the Darlington Dun Cow page. This review is regarding individuals being turned away from the pub based on their heritage (being Scottish). I would like to point out that this is absolutely false, we welcome every individual no matter what your heritage may be. I can also personally tell you this is simply not true seeing as though I have worked here for nine years, and I myself am Scottish. So, I highly doubt I would have a job within this pub if this were the case, nor would I like to work in an establishment that had this mindset. It is disheartening to hear that the individual has been subject to this discrimination and if you would ever like to come and visit the Dun Cow DURHAM you will be welcome and made to feel comfortable with no judgment, I can assure...
Read moreAlthough it was a few years ago I really, really enjoyed my visit to this pub and its Thursday night music session. The pub itself, the beer and the service were second to none. But for me, as a player of traditional Irish music, the high point was the session itself: the welcome the other players showed me, the quality of their music, and their general warmth was very touching. I wished at the time I could have returned to play with them the very next day, never mind the next Thursday! Sadly, I heard through the grapevine that this beautiful music event, that was their session, is no more. A living art form killed by politics or economics. Happens all too...
