Most delicious burguers I have tried in Durham. The place looks nice but you can see it’s a little crooked when you go upstairs, which is where the bathrooms are. You can also make reservations here for an event but apparently they will ask you to specify your order and of other 9 people. The service is great, not only are they friendly but also really quick in bringing the drinks and food. The burguers are delicious, specially the Wild Bill which I totally recommend, with a price of approx £10,90. The only thing to keep in mind is that these burguers are pretty big and you might not be able to finish it, depending on how much you eat. However, I’m pretty sure one could satisfy you. The chips are good but it’s worth pointing out that they don’t come with salt, or if they do, it’s really little salt. I tried the Hillbilly beer which is a Lager beer specially made for Fat Hippo and has a good taste just a little bit strong. Also, the milkshakes they sell are really good.

I’ve been dying to try Fat Hippo for so long! I didn’t even realise there was one in Durham, and on an impromptu visit we stumbled across it. They were really accommodating and found us a seat to enjoy a meal, even though we hadn’t prebooked. The burger was incredible. Easily the best burger I have ever eaten in my life. I ordered the Stinky Pete burger which was so flavourful and the portions are really generous. The onion jam they use is delicious too, I think I could become addicted to it. The staff were all super friendly and helpful and our visit was all round great. I love the decor of the place and it has a nice, chilled atmosphere. The only downside was that the ‘Fast Hippo’ menu isn’t available on weekends. This was a little disappointing to one of the people we visited with as he has a smaller appetite and wanted a smaller burger option. Regardless, this place deserves 5 stars because everything else is flawless.

I've been to Fat Hippo twice. It has plenty of vegan starters and mains which is brilliant and all of the stuff I've tried has been really delicious. The reason I'm only giving 3 stars though is because on both occasions of visiting I have noticed very poor customer service. We have been lucky in having generally nice staff serving us but I remember on the first occasion there was a member of staff turned away from the seating area at the back of the bottom floor, where all the customers were seated, looking at his phone in view of all the customers and never looking back to check on customers to see if they were ready to order or check if they needed anything or were enjoying their meals, which I found to be very unprofessional (having worked in similar rolls myself for several years). On the second visit we were sat next to the entrance/exit of the restaurant and I noticed a couple commenting on the fact that the food was very expensive for what it was to one of the staff members as they left, which in all honesty was a fair comment to make, and instead of replying politely and saying that they would relay their feedback to a manager or something of that ilk, the member of staff replied in a very sarcastic and rude tone to the couple saying something about the fact that they were a restaurant and they get what they pay for, which was shocking to witness and honestly put me off going their seeing a member of staff act so rudely and unprofessionally. Clearly the high prices of the food does not pay towards customer service training. Personally I would come back as I do really enjoy the food but they really need to train their staff in customer service and basic manners. Also on a side note it would be great if they could add some vegan desserts.

Been going to the fat hippo jesmond/underground for around 8 years, tried Durham one for the first time for their shredded kruger burger with dirty sweet potato fries. Burger: alright tasting, considering we'd waited 50 minutes it was lukewarm at best, came in a puddle of the pink pickled onion juice, which had absorbed into the bottom of the bun so it was like a cold wet pickled sponge that fell apart on first picking it up. Burger taste was nice but temp was way too cold and the bottom of was so soaked/disintegrating that it was slimey on the tongue. Sweet potato dirty fries were lukewarm, limp and completely covered in sauce from all sides. Pretty much all stuck together as a single blob and all you could taste was the insane amount of sauce that had been put on them. The building / tables is on a steep slant meaning that drinks spill the second they are put down in front of you when they've been filled to the top. My 3yo daughter was given some crayons to colour with but the second she put them on the table they would roll off onto the floor so it was an exercise in retrieving them over and over. Style over substance sadly here, worst hippo experience yet, stick to the underground in Newcastle or the one in Jesmond instead

Very mixed experience. The food was mostly good especially the tatter totts and and fat hippo burger. The restaurant was very clean and we were seated quickly, service was fast at first but then by the end of the meal our waitress was no where to be seen and all the other waiters were ignoring us when we had been obviously finished for at least 20 minutes. I had the PB&JJ burger which was bland and not very exciting. Chilli jam wasn’t spicy and peanut butter wasn’t very strong. But the bun was very good. My friend had the semi parm life burger which was good, especially the garlic sauce but it was raw in parts. When we tried to show the staff they claimed lighting, bad quality meat and even outright said we were wrong without any attempt at an apology. When we eventually had to leave to not miss a train after having asked for the bill multiple times and not receiving it the woman taking our payment was defensive and rude about the quality of the food and tried to blame us for not having mentioned it earlier when we had been ignored by staff. Not impressed with the attitude of the staff in this place. The place was not busy at all and yet it felt like they were all rushed around and on short fuses unable to give polite service.

I’ve been here twice to order food for take away. The first time, the waitress told me that I should stand outside to wait for my order (there were free seats inside the restaurant). I literally stood outside alone in the cold winter for 20 minutes while there were seats inside!!! I had sworn never to go back but a friend of mine told me to try a burger. This 2nd time, the waitress that attended to me told me to wait inside but I waited 45 minutes before getting my order!!! Their service is nothing to write home about! Okay, let’s talk about the burgers. The 1st time, I ordered the fat hippo beef burger and was very unimpressed by the entire meal. The 2nd time, I ordered the Hangover III chicken burger and wow!!! I was also underwhelmed!!! Also, some parts of the breaded chicken tasted a bit burnt. I’ve had better burgers and the only thing that I would recommend is their hand-cut fries. Everything about them is overhyped. I’m definitely never going back.
