This is a lovely little place with friendly atmosphere and a welcoming, pleasant team.
To my tastes, the beautifully prepared and generously filled croque monsieur was a tad over toasted but not spoiled by that.
The fruit scone was a slightly odd texture, a bit bread-like but I believe they’re made with buttermilk, not something I’ve tried before, so it may be that’s the expected texture. It was still nicely presented and maintained the authentic artisanal theme.
It wasn’t busy but my order was incomplete and then partially wrong but rectified without hesitation and with appropriate apologies. If I’d been in a hurry, I would have hurried things along and I’m confident I’d have been accommodated where possible.
£17-£18(ish) for a cheese and ham croque monsieur, a large cappuccino, an English breakfast tea and a fruit scone.
It’s not cheap but entirely in keeping with the quality of what’s provided and considerably higher quality than anything Costa or their ilk sell, most likely for around the same cost. It’s also a local business in the finest tradition, so very worth supporting.
As a visitor to Windsor every month or so, I expect to be back in and if I were local, I’d visit more often.

Read moreCame in to a chaotic atmosphere with multiple people behind the counter and no one seeming to know what they were doing. The till machine failed and this meant that there was added stress and confusion for the staff (not their fault, but they could have handled it better). Initially asked for soup but was told it wasn’t on the menu in the summer (despite actually being on the menu). I then ordered the eggs Benedict with salmon (should be called eggs royale if with salmon but the menu stated Benedict). I was told that this was eggs royale. I said I knew this, I just wanted it with salmon and not ham, and their menu called it Benedict, so I was ordering as per the menu. The food arrived with ham and salmon (so I had to remove the ham). The food was also cold and the egg completely dry, not runny as you would expect from a proper poached egg. We had also ordered a poached egg and avocado on toast which took a long time to arrive (the others had essentially finished by the time the food arrived). Again the poached eggs were dry and cold. Very disappointing and disorganised, especially as we have had regularly good experiences before. There is clearly a change of personnel, with far too many people standing idly behind the counter and leading to...
Read moreThe food was very good but the pricing is misleading! 'Eat out' is cheaper than 'eat in' but that only applies if the food you ordered is "not hot"! Because according to the employee at Rex, the pricing for 'eat out' only applies if the food is "not hot". If it's hot, you pay the full price regardless if you are eating it in or taking it away!! Absolutely ridiculous!! I tried explaining to the lovely employee that I am taking the food to go and so it doesn't matter if the food is hot or cold ... but I suspect it went straight above her head!! Never eating there again! Rip-off
Further to your reply, most customers wouldn't know the HMRC's 20% VAT which I understand but ask yourself this...if the same government asks all bakery owners to wake up at half four every morning and scream, "Gregg's is the best!!" Would you?? Seems absurd, right. And I agree, it is. The same way to me it seems absurd that eating in or out is not the same as hot or cold, regardless of what the government says!
Instead of defending the government who were blantantly having lockdown parties whilst everyone else was self-isolating , it's more humbling especially given you are a small family business to apologise & state that the Eat in & Eat out signage...
