Was super excited to go to this restaurant after a friend recommending it and seeing all the amazing pics on social media of plated food. As a family we all get the chance to pick a venue to eat at as a family as a treat ever few mths. This was my choice! Unfortunately a family of 4 left very disappointed! Most likely not to return.

We were greeted by a a lovely friendly server who invited us to our seat. We were brought completely to water and menus to the table. A short time later a different server approached our table and asked what we were having (not very friendly and quiet standoffish) With it being our first time in the restaurant I asked if I could have the Sunday roast and asked her advice on which meat she would suggest. She stared at me for a brief second and said it’s on the menu I repeated myself and she said it was up to me in a dismissive tone! My kids were going to ask her advice on burgers but decided after the response from her not to. We ordered a Sunday roast with Sirloin and 3 burgers, 2 portions of onion rings, 3 soda waters and lime and one with blackcurrant. The server returned a short time later with our drinks and cutlery no pleasantries came from the server. Whilst waiting for our food (around 30 mins) we all played with the games that were in the area (great idea)

Our food arrived the burgers looked great ! The Sunday roast most definitely did not look anything like their social media images. Looked like a big very pink slab of beef with over cooked roast potatoes 3 stems of broccoli tenders, some green beans with 2 of the smaller carrots ever and a small grey looking Yorkshire pudding!!! Very disappointed. The kids and my husbands burger was over cooked! The meat was dry, tough to eat, lettuce was big thick clumps, not much sauce, untoasted burger bun which fell apart. The best part of their plate was the chips. The onion rings were mostly batter a couple didn’t even taste like they had onions in them. Result was the burgers were half eaten, roast - half of the meat was left due to the very pink (would say rawness) only one potatoe was eaten as rest were solid as if the had been cook d 3/4 times over.

Unfortunately not a nice family experience. We don’t find the atmosphere great and left with an unpleasant,...

It started well, we were meeting family we hadn’t seen in years and thought this would be a relaxed atmosphere to sit down have a drink, eat good food and get reacquainted.

It turns out maybe a little too relaxed….

Waiter brings red wine to table behind the head of one of our party who was busy chatting and had no idea he was there behind him, (there was a clear space to serve the drinks at the end of the table so everyone could have seen him but he’s clearly challenged with spatial awareness ) the wine ended up spilled all over the table, over my partner (wearing a really expensive Christmas jumper), splattering over me (wearing a new cream top and jacket) and my cousin who got hit with wine too - luckily wearing darker colours. The waiter barely raised an eyebrow or seemed concerned. It was a shit show, us pouring white wine and salt into the cream coloured jacket (I didn’t realise my top was hit until I got to the bathroom), the waiter sloppily mopping up the red wine but offering no apology or assistance. He offered to put a new table cloth on top of the soaking wet red wine covered one which we declined and asked him to change completely. He changed it for one that was too small and made the plates tip and wobble as you cut your food. I don’t think at any point this waiter actually apologised for any of the melee. You would have expected an apology on the way out from some of the team but we got absolutely nothing. There was a waitress who seemed concerned and kindly brought soda water and a cloth to blot at the stained jumper, top and jacket.

Really disappointed with the service and attentiveness that could have been offered to turn this episode around. I was once a waitress, and if this was me I would have made sure the customers knew I was sorry if I had caused an incident like this, especially with red wine. This waiter really couldn’t care less about what had happened to our clothes. They left the service on the bill when we asked to pay which I asked them to remove.

The food tasted okay but our experience was ruined by the general incompetence of the waiter.

Sadly with this experience I don’t think we...

Excellent gastro pub experience with some of the best pub food I’ve ever had for a very affordable price! All the ingredients and sauces are excellently paired with each other!

The pork belly starter was excellent. Crispy and sweet because of its glazing and the dressing on the small accompanying salad.

My colleague had the Butterfly and the Pig Burger with a gluten-free bun and really enjoyed it.

Luckily we walked in on Sunday, meaning there’s the Sunday roast special! The ribeye just sold out sadly, but the sirloin was also amazing!

Also had a side of the awesome crunchy fried haggis balls. As a Dutchman these remind me of most gourmet ‘bitterballs’ from home, so getting a side of mustard worked perfectly with these!

We are stuffed, but it won’t hurt to have a look at their desert menu would it?

Definitely coming back here!

Wish they had some older whiskies available, but the Dalmore 18 kept me happy and was perfectly paired with my meal :).

Update one year later (Nov 1st 2023): Came back, not on a Sunday this time. Started with sharing the haggis fritters, which were super fluffy and tasty paired perfectly with a peppercorn sauce. As a main, I had the seasonal Gammon steak while my friend took the chicken burger with a gluten free bun. Everything was excellent. The fries were cooked to perfection, the portions were almost too much for us and the staff was super helpful as always!

Make sure to also check their website for their calendar of...

Would I Return - ✔ YES Would I Recommend - ✔ YES I visited the Tea Room upstairs. Great little place, limited seating but fine service. I was able to get a table without reservations but I would suggest booking a table before you arrive due to the limited space. You have 2 options: 🔹️Order Tea Service (set tea plate with savouries and sweets) 🔹️Order a la carte (off the menu) I opted for the latter. Breakfast, soups, salads, wraps and sandwiches (on your choice of bread) available as well as a list of cakes, teas and coffe options available. 🍞🥐🥖The Sandwiches I tried were good (Ham and Brie and Coronation Chicken) , I opted for each on sourdough bread which was toasted and buttered pre toppings piled on. 🍰🍰🍰🍰🍰🍰🍰 The desserts were absolutely beautiful and eyecatching but fell a little flat when it came to flavour. 🍰🍫The Chocolate Guinness cake had a very dense almost pudding like texture, chocolate flavour similar to devil's food cake and the frosting was whipped cream. By no means was this cake bad, but I suppose I was expecting more flavour perhaps from the guinness or maybe a more dynamic frosting. 🥕🍰 The Carrot Maple Cake was a bit dry and was very basic with respect to flavour. A few plump raisins throughout with a whipped cream topping. Again, a bit underwhelming. It's still a neat little joint where you can relax or have a chat. I will give them another go and perhaps try the afternoon tea service on my next visit.
