I went here for a brunch club outing recently and I have to start off by saying I really, really enjoyed the chef's table and had our meal ended there, I would have been pretty delighted. I loved the selection of meats and fish and had a lovely omelette freshly made by the chef. I would have loved to try the pancakes with some fruit as well but was trying not to overdo it so resisted. I did have a sneaky waffle though (they were mini) and we were brought some maple syrup when we asked for some. The waffle was REALLY good, if I hadn't been so full I'd have been tempted to go back for another after dessert!
My soup was OK, Nik loved it (carrot & ginger) but I had to add quite a bit of seasoning to mine and didn't eat much of it.
Unfortunately the rest of my meal was a bit of a let down. I was really looking forward to the Sunday Roast portion of this brunch menu, having experienced the same kind of menu at the wonderful HdV at One Devonshire, and paced myself accordingly - I wish I'd just gone back to the chef's table a couple more times instead! Sadly, this roast, despite looking pretty awesome, was a huge disappointment. My beef was cold, the gravy was thin, the veg pretty tasteless, the Yorkshire pud was chewy and dry and the roast potatoes were just disgusting - I have no idea how (or when) they were cooked but none of us who had the roast ate them as far as I know.
I really hate sending things back and very rarely do it but as we were there specifically to review it on the special 2 for 1 deal I did make a point of saying I was disappointed. It's only fair to give them a chance to do something about it if I'm planning a bad review. They dealt with it very well and offered me something else from the menu so I went safe and chose the steak frites. This came pretty quickly and was absolutely delicious. Well cooked and very well seasoned with seriously scrummy fries! Had I not sampled the awful roast I would have given it 4 stars.
It was a bit annoying when dessert then took over 20 minutes to arrive. I had finished my coffee way before dessert came which was a shame as I would have preferred to enjoy them together. I have no idea why a few sundaes, ice-creams, cheese plate and creme brulee took so long. Anyway, my creme brulee was nice. Not amazing but enjoyable. The coffee was also nice and served with a madeleine.
Overall, I wouldn't bother going back, despite being convinced I would when I saw the menu! I would much rather go to the one at Hotel du Vin [even though it's gone up by £5 since I last had it (it's now £25 for 4 courses), I still think it's great value and the quality is definitely better!] I'm glad we got this on the 2 for 1 deal and I did have a nice time and do generally like the Mal, I just hadn't planned to spend quite so long there! I wasn't impressed with some of the food and know I can definitely get better...
Read moreI visited Malmaison in Glasgow today for a halal/vegetarian afternoon tea. I was treating my niece for her birthday. The desserts were nice, there was a carrot cake, cakesicle and a mini sundae. We got one scone each. As for the savoury stuff, this was an absolute disgrace, 2 mini tacos with avocado, lettuce, cherry tomatoes & I think there was some rocket or something similar in them. They had then placed the same ingredients with the addition of feta cheese in a wrap and then the exact same in a mini jar. Something, I could have made at home. There was also a veggie slider which luckily wasnt stuffed with the same filling but still disgusting & what I believe was quiche which was untouched. I totally understand if there was no halal options but surely as part of the vegetarian menu, they could have added some Tuna/salmon at least, maybe some cheese savoury, egg mayo for a variety. I have been to many places for afternoon tea and so much more is offered at the same price of £59… yes, I bloody paid £59 for veggies. We got one scone each and they were tinnnyy, thats never been the case in any place before. I visited the Edinburgh branch a few years ago and it was a much more pleasant experience, hence why I booked this. It felt like we were overlooked just because of our dietary requirements and the best they could do was to put all the veg contents in the kitchen to create a presentable platter. Absolutely traumatised.
The staff members took their time but did offer soft drinks on the house because of this which was much appreciated. I visited today which is a Monday, so it was very quiet. At one point we needed a fresh pot of tea but no one was around. There was a staff member who came out once ( later on) to see if we were ok.
This afternoon tea (savoury bits) were catered to those who are vegan (minus the tiny bit of cheese). If we’re asking for vegetarian or halal, we’re asking for more than just vegetables. Please keep that in mind for the future for anyone else who makes the mistake of booking in an afternoon tea here.
The staff members were lovely. I don’t have anything negative to say about them. The management need to sort out the contents in the kitchen so they can do a better job in pleasing...
Read moreHi there, we received a voucher for the restaurant as a gift from one of my husbands customers. On arrival we were taken to our table which we were informed was in a nice "quiet corner "which was good because the restaurant had been very busy that evening. The waiting staff were lovely. It quickly became apparent that the customers with vouchers that evening were all being seated in the same area . After our chosen wine was delivered to our table it was a matter of minutes before our dinner was brought to our table , the steak was lovely and cooked as per our request. The side portion was very small, I had two chips and gave my husband five, there were five onion rings and a very small side salad that looked more like it was for one person rather than two. The tomatoes were soft and if they were in my fridge they would have gone in the compost bin rather than the salad. Our table had a wonky leg - not great when your trying to cut your steak. I wonder what drives these establishments to take part in these voucher schemes. Is it to bring in some much needed revenue when they are quiet , or is it to introduce new customers ? Either way we both felt like the discount customers who weren't good enough to eat with the people who were paying normal prices. I think in theses cases they should be trying harder to make new returning customers from people who otherwise hadn't visited before. In the past we have been given this type of voucher for similar restaurants and bars and have felt like the poorer customers who couldn't afford to visit and eat from the full menu in most cases. STOP selling deals if your not willing to treat people with vouchers the same as full paying customers. I don't believe you knowingly set out to make people feel like this but I can assure you this is how we were made to feel and I'm sure we weren't the only ones. I hope you will take on my comments and think about them for the future . Thanking you...
