Now this place is special. one of those rare places on planet Earth where you are in for an unsuspecting treat with no attitude or arrogance. They do exactly what they say they will and they do it brilliantly. We were celebrating our friends recovery and drove out from Edinburgh. I don't know if this was normal but as I parked fifty meters away. Aces as one of us was in a wheelchair. The friend of mine who recommended this place is a very talented chef so I had high hopes and once you walk around the little tidal harbour to the shack you realise that this is the real deal. We went at lunchtime on an early Autumnal day. No que. Ordered three lobsters, one calamari, chowder and crab salad. Were given a pager and sat down for a salivating wait. Don't expect comfy chairs and high dining. To kill some time I walked around the little harbour and found some pebbles to level the table. What you are going to get is an amazingly well cooked lobster. Easily the star of the show. For some reason we all got two claws with our half a lobster apparently because they were not as large. I hadn't noticed. I've been very fortunate to have eaten many lobsters around the world and this one right here was from memory the best I've ever had. Simply done in garlic butter but cooked to perfection. The meat in the claws was moist yet firm and flavorsome. It is very easy to overcook a lobster. Washed down with a cool recycled plastic glass of sauvignon. Banging out food like this in a place like this with the attitude it hasn't got is beyond commendable in today's post factual world. In fact for the first 8 minutes of the pager buzzing and us all eating the world actually made sense for a bit. That my friends is the sign of a good meal. In the right place at the right time with the right people. Not everyone is going to like it but hey for what it is worth I loved it. So much so I wrote this in the hope that others may experience the...
Read moreWe visited the Lobster Shack yesterday. Whilst the food was really great, I must say that if we hadn't waited in a long queue (not put off by this as its clearly evident of the quality) and if we hadn't already ordered the food and paid over £60...I would have left due to the way the young boy serving at the till was spoken to. It was very uncomfortable to witness and in all honesty took the excitement away from our experience here. I understand that the pressure and demand must be frustrating to try and manage at times, but to see/hear a young boy be spoken to in the manner that he was by the chap cooking was unacceptable and really disappointing. I've tried to be fair here as the food was really good, but to treat a colleague in such a way for all the customers to hear makes me think it wasn't a one off and not something I was comfortable with at all. I'm actually very disappointed that I didn't speak up at the time, and haven't stopped thinking about it since...which is the main experience I've now taken from a visit to this place. Please consider this as a genuine review and pay attention to the way this young boy was shouted at and in all honesty very much belittled.
Hopefully this was an outburst which is not...
Read moreSomething has changed here, or maybe they just had a bad day, either way, whoever was cooking the lobster and made the garlic butter on Friday the 21st July, needs some training. We've visited this place on numerous occasions while in the area and always couldn't wait to get a couple of full lobsters, that have always been cooked to perfection covered in delicious garlic butter.
This time was an experience I would not like to repeat, 2 full lobster dishes ordered for my wife and I, both overcooked, garlic butter I'm not really sure what happened here but very little flavour of garlic, and both our boxes had the lobster claws smashed with tiny little bits of shell everywhere, not great for the teeth, and the meat in the claws was a very weird texture, rubbery and gooey.
I hate to leave a bad review for the lobster shack, I really do as we've had some really great food here in the past, but at just under £100 for two full lobster boxes and two soft drinks, it really should be someone who knows what they are doing when preparing such beautiful ingredients. I didn't complain at the time and I kinda wish I did, but having worked in the catering trade myself a long time ago, I put it down to perhaps a bad...
