Being from the north and visiting Southend I was keen to try the almost mythical jellied eels of old London town. Not easy to find even in Southend, but Wilkies came to the rescue. We bought jellied eels and a few other trays. All were delicious. Even the eels. I was over the moon and went back for more. My only disappointment was with the wooden faced young girls serving. It was our first time trying something from a seafood shop and decided with Whelks which I have to say would come back and get again! It was fresh, good texture, not sandy and a great snack. We had seafood sauce on top. We asked what would you normally eat with it and the sweet lady that served us recommended vinegar and black pepper which was a great recommendation. Read moreService was appalling the person did not look interested at all, the eels were over priced at £5 for small and £8 for large. The small we got 3 eels and basically a pot of jelly.
Walk to the pier there is a better and priced better at £3.50 small ( get more than 3 eels too ) and large £6.80. It’s just across the road from the pier entrance in the arches.
