Visited last night for a family supper. Overall, the food and general experience were very dissappointing. The Melanze Napolitane starter was one of the worst I have had, and I have had this dish 100s of times. Too much aubergine, barely half-cooked, and too little or no tomato sauce in the two examples we ordered. My calzone crust was burnt over half its surface, and there was far too much cheese and too little other fillings. None of us felt like desserts as we had sampled enough. I suspect that there is no Italian member of staff, and the kitchen staff have little idea of what Italian food SHOULD look like and taste like. But the kitchen staff seemed to have lots of time to chat.
The atmosphere wasn't helped by a group of three collecting "take aways" for about six. There was much discussion about their order, right next to our table, and this intrusion was topped by one of them accidentally breaking a wine glass. The attraction of providing "take aways" from a restaurant with just 4 tables occupied is clear, but there is a price to be paid in spoiling things for in-house diners. The long delay before our main courses were served was probably caused by the take away order. This won't happen again, because this visit our third, will be our last.
Our party was placed near the door, near another group, with the rest of the numerous tables empty. I commented to the waiter that we would like to be further inside to keep warm, and he replied that "No one likes being near the door". I know restaurants want to look busy from the street, but this little interaction told me that Bella Capri don't really appreciate...
Read moreA LOT of work needed. Maybe we were unlucky.
The good - the restaurant is lovely and has a great atmosphere .
The bad - they couldn’t remember if we had been given our starters, they checked and then started making them, we waited ages. The service was poor, unprofessional, a lot of young staff who need further training. Some plates were cleared whilst someone was still eating. We were waiting for service and they were gathered dancing at the bar.
The ugly - an incorrectly cooked (£30) steak sent back, steak sauces also returned and one of our party ate alone. Nobody really seemed to be in control. At the end of the evening there was no manager in sight and our waitress told us that due to the problems with our table - the chef had walked out.
There were only 3 of us. We would usually have all 3 courses but opted not to for all the reasons above and we just wanted to leave. We left with not so much as an apology or complimentary coffee. Such a shame as the place looks great and we live and eat out locally often and were hoping for a new regular...
Read moreWe popped in for a very early midweek dinner. It's a large, clean and spacious restaurant. The service was very good. The waiter didn't know the grape of the house white but it was pleasant enough, nicely chilled with a fruity bouquet. Despite clearly being in a tomato arabiata-like sauce, the 'prawns in garlic butter', had no sign of any butter. It was, however, very tasty, so we didn't complain. The calamari had a good crispiness to it and the home made tartare sauce was spot on. My partner opted for the Capri salad with goats cheese. Very tasty but the avocados were unripe and inedible. I can't understand how it left the kitchen. The hard avocados would have been better employed in a smash 'n' grab, than on a dinner plate. Calabrese pizza was my choice of main. A generous scattering of nduja and pepperoni was deliciously hot. With so many good food options available in Fleet at the moment, restaurants really have to be on top of their game. Sadly, in this instance,...
