I loved this place, the music was fabulous, the staff were gorgeous and friendly and polite and everything was clean and tidy. A couple of comments that stopped me giving it five stars. The menu was a bit confusing. It might be worth giving it to a designer to sort out the layout and your branding etc. This could of course be a covid menu and therefore temporary but it felt a bit like a school exercise sheet rather than a night out at a nice restaurant. I think the staff lovely but need a bit more training. They didn't seem to be very confident, one had been there two years and one just a couple of days and they were struggling a bit with the amount of customers. Perhaps you need someone else taking takeaway orders? The food. My husband had the fried dumplings which wer delicious, I ordered plantain balls which weren't on. That's fine but I think this should have been said when I got the menu. You kindly cooked me fried plantain as a starter instead band gave me a delicious sauce which I was very happy with. The starters were delicious.
For my main I had fish curry and steamed rice. The fish was fab but it was way way to salty, which completely distracted from the delicious sauce. My partner had the three small dish main course, Curried goat, jerk chicken and a beef stew And jollof rice He was completely happy with his meal, However I feel the chicken was in a barbecue sauce not a jerk, so I was a bit confused when I tasted it.
Overall though we had a wonderful...
Read moreNothing wrong with the food per se, albeit very small portions, I had the jerk chicken with rice & peas plus some planton. However I noticed a specific change in attitude (manner/way I was looked at) when the person doing the serving realised that I wasn't going to order any of their very overpriced alcoholic drinks, I'm of late middle age and just don't drink anymore, so when I asked just for some water, the vibe changed completely to the point of being noticeable, to put it mildly.
I won't be returning as I much prefer to dine in a place with friendly staff or owners.
In fairness I do understand that the restaurant business has been through a bad time post pandemic but giving customers such a sudden change of attitude to the point of staring at you unpleasantly if you're not ordering from their drinks menu is thoroughly unwelcoming.
Maybe that's why they gave me such small portions of everything, I ended up going home and having a snack.
I can only comment from my one single visit, I was dining alone, maybe they don't like that too, but I can't recommend and will avoid in future. I've only moved to the area in the last few weeks and have found numerous other restaurants that are perfectly friendly and pleasant in a...
Read moreWe tried a variety of dishes and they were either okay or below average. If you're Caribbean, you will be disappointed as it definitely doesn't compare to a home cooked meal but it's decent enough. The best thing was the curry goat and jollof rice. The jerk chicken was more like BBQ chicken, the cassava had a slightly bitter aftertaste. Think we had a bad batch of the chicken curry as the spices weren't cooked properly and it had a slightly watery consistency. Everything in general lacked spices and pepper but I guess they are catering to a British population, I just wish they didn't water it down so much though. When we gave feedback to the staff, they were too defensive and came up with many excuses instead of trying to rectify the issue, no offer of a discount to compensate. I wouldn't go again but I wish them well because the people of Hastings seem to...
