The essence of The Star is that it doesn't try to be all things to all men and women. No distracting TV or loud blaring music that kills conversation (just good nostalgic background sounds at the right volume).
Landlord Paul knows his target market and delivers every time, with a superb range of cask ales that are rotated regularly, although staple favourites such as Citra IPA and Timothy Taylor's Landlord or Boltmaker feature regularly. I prefer pale ale, so Citra, White Rat, NZ Pale or Sambra (from Chadkirk brewery) and Rooster's Variations, among numerous others, have all gone down well. You'll be spoilt for choice.
That's not to say that they aren't many other options. If you enjoy a darker brew, the Plum Porter seems to go down well. And of course, spirit drinkers are also very well catered for. A Brockman's G&T anyone?
It's also good to see Paul, who prides himself on serving well-kept quality beers, making the most of what local breweries have to offer, including the nearby Howard Town, by making their beers available to customers at a fair price. Staff regulars Tom, Anne and Shannon all provide good, knowledgeable service with a smile.
The Star is by far the best real ale pub in Glossop and well worth a visit if you are a little further it, too. It's literally next door to Glossop station.
