We had high expectations of the food after reading past reviews on Google, but my wife and I were both disappointed.
I was looking forward to the corn beef hash, red cabbage and crusty roll, as I haven't had this dish in years, and my mum used to serve it with red cabbage. This was served, but no mention that they had substituted the red cabbage with beetroot. I went to the bar to query this, and was told they had run out of red cabbage. Whilst this was disappointing, it would have been nice if they had mentioned this and apologised. The second disappointment was that there was only a couple of pieces of potato in my hash. Lots of corned beef and carrots. There definitely should have been more potatoes, and I check this by googling images of this dish and recipes. The roll was very pale, not baked long enough to become the described crusty.
My wife has the sea bass, but she told me it was smoked and didn't taste like sea bass, although there was plenty of it. She thought it tasted more like kippers! Maybe there was another unannounced substation and this wasn't the fish we ordered. She enjoyed the pesto mash, but the broccoli and peas were cold already when served.
On a positive note, the pub is dog friendly and the lady who served our food gave them a treat. The real ale I had was served in good condition. The pub was busy on the Saturday afternoon when we visited, which is good to see.
From our experience I cannot recommend this pub, especially for dining.
Update after response: My wife gave me a bit of her fish and it definitely tasted smoked . Yes it was corned beef hash which is meant to have corned beef, but from my experience and images and recipes seen from a Google search show that this dish normally has a lot more potatoes. Maybe someone got my share, because I only got a couple of pieces, so obviously in your recipe. I'm glad you agree I should has been told the red cabbage had run out rather than just substituting it. There was no comment about the cold vegetables or under baked roll which...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe location is really good. There was a large group of us, about 14, so we expected that they might not have space but the sofa seating area was completely free and other seats scattered round the pub were free. Two ladies I locked eyes with told me there was definitely no space inside but if I wanted to check out the beer garden I could. Whilst I appreciate that staff have more awareness of why a certain seating area is available or not, I wouldāve appreciated it more if one of them at least attempted to accommodate us inside. No smiles, no greetings. I work in customer service and have worked in hospitality waiting tables, and even though a request seems unusual, Iām eager to make the client feel like Iām at least trying to accommodate them. So we were mainly let down by the negative attitude. Again, Iād like to stress that even though we were a large group and last minute, which I know is sometimes impossible to accommodate, what really stands out in a good place is how the staff respond. We didnāt feel welcome. Also, a worker was working with no health and safety gear fixing tables right beside on of our tables who had to zip down the pod curtain due to sparks and dust reaching them.
Edit as response to owner: A typical reply from my boss to negative reviews goes along the lines of āweāre really sorry this was your experience today. Weād like to make it up to you, but in the meantime would you be able to email us to talk about this?ā I was afraid my review would be misunderstood. I did recognise we would be a difficult party to accommodate due to size, my issue was with the general unwelcoming demeanour of the staff. This is something you have control over, and can make a world of difference when someoneās demand canāt be met āŗļø reviews are not a personal attack on you as a business owner, they exist to help you grow and improve as a host. Enjoy...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIt's no celiac approved unfortunately I got poorly when I got home.... (Not due to the quality of the food but I think due to the chips perhaps cooked in the same fryer as gluten food such as battered food) and I feel that this needs to be seen as a real allergy and perhaps the staff could be educated in celiac disease... my son enjoyed his nuggets but due to the fact I was quite poorly unfortunately I will not be eating here again ..... what a shame considering hundreds of thousands of people have now been diagnosed celiac
(a responce to your responce.... actually I asked if the chips were gluten free why would I ask if they were not for me... as I said before not just you but many many places need to be educated in celiac disease your member of staff knew nothing about it at all and I did actually say to her that it can't even be cooked in the same pan and she went to check the chips were gluten free so your responce is incorrect) also side note as you seem to be getting not picky the said was awful it was thick roots of iceberg lettuce cut into huge chunks that I left most of with one tiny piece of onion and one tiny slice of tomatoe it's a shame as the food used to be beautiful here I felt on the day the passion has...
