There are coffee shops, there are chain shops and then there are artists. The Music Room, like it's bigger sister The Hall and parent Atkinsons Coffee Merchants are certainly in the artists category.
The phrase artisan has become sullied in recent years and seem almost to have been synonymised to mean home made or rustic. Atkinsons Coffee Quarter in Lancaster are trying to reclaim the term to mean individual, classic, superior and hand made.
There is a lot of love in the coffee that is served here. Do not expect a bucket of milk in 3 sizes with slightly burned beans, the coffee served here comes in a small cup. That's not espresso that's the Latte as well. Atkinsons don't believe in bitter brews weakened with over-consumption of dairy, it's probably why both of their coffee shops are award winning premises.
The location of the Music room is a secluded area of the city called Sun square, aptly named as it get the sun most of the day. The building is a work of art and the music a tuneful blend of classic blues and jazz played gently to complement and not interrupt speech.

My partner and I shared this, it was lovely, and perfect with the Americano I ordered.
The coffee it self was unfortunately quite sharp and bitter, but I will be going back to try it again and I hope to have a much better experience...
Read moreI have spent the last week staying in The Music Room, holiday let, above the cafe. It is a Landmark Trust property, and the baroque plasterwork in the bedroom is exceptional, and took over 6000 hours to create / repair. This beautiful building sleeps two people, has a fully equipped kitchen, a good sized bathroom, a sitting area, and a roof terrace with views across the city. You are within a short walk to the shops, restaurants, castle, cathedral, everywhere. I shared a video on my YouTube channel: urbantiger6540 if you want a...
