Caramel
Aroma group: toasty. The smell of «caramel» in coffee. This scent is a powerful flavor enhancer and an important part of the aroma of coffee. It is most noticeable and very typical in a brew of arabica. (Le nez du café #25)
Fresh Butter
Aroma group: buttery. The smell of «fresh butter» in coffee. This note, like that of melted butter, is a watertight guarantee of quality that is common to all the great arabicas. It brings voluptuousness and mildness, and considerably enhances the range of aromas in certain coffee. It is twice as noticeable in the brew, than in the grounds, twice as important in the arabicas, than in the robustas. (Le nez du café #18)
Roasted Peanuts
Aroma group: toasty. The smell of «roasted peanuts» in coffee. When it is not too strong, it is a sign of elegance and is sometimes called the greek tastes. Certain types of coffee have a natural tendency to give off this scent and the greeks often add raw peanuts to green coffee beans to enhance it. (Le nez du café #28)
Roasted Hazelnuts
Aroma group: toasty (dried fruits). The smell of «roasted hazelnuts» in coffee. Whether it be the scent of young and tender or of roasted hazelnuts, this fragrance always brings a certain sweetness to coffee's range of aromas and is a sign of light roasting. It is much more prominent in the grounds, than in the brew, and is blatantly obvious in the arabicas, and even stronger in the robustas. (Le nez du café #29)
Roasted Almonds
Aroma group: toasty (dried fruits). The smell of «roasted almonds» in coffee. This is one of the most attractive scents around and it combines amazingly well with the aroma of chocolate. (Le nez du café #27)

My first time visiting The Music Room, although I have lived in Lancaster for over 10 years, I'm ashamed to say I had no idea it existed. A lovely little cafe! We had a delicious Viennese swirl biscuit, half dipped in chocolate, to my surprise it turned out to be two Viennese swirls with a generous dollop of frosting in between, I was a bit taken back by it and I thought it would be too sickly - it thankfully was not sweet at all. My partner and I shared this, it was lovely, and perfect with the Americano I ordered. The coffee it self was unfortunately quite sharp and bitter, but I will be going back to try it again and I hope to have a much better experience with the coffe.

I have spent the last week staying in The Music Room, holiday let, above the cafe. It is a Landmark Trust property, and the baroque plasterwork in the bedroom is exceptional, and took over 6000 hours to create / repair. This beautiful building sleeps two people, has a fully equipped kitchen, a good sized bathroom, a sitting area, and a roof terrace with views across the city. You are within a short walk to the shops, restaurants, castle, cathedral, everywhere. I shared a video on my YouTube channel: urbantiger6540 if you want a look around.

Lovely little place to grab a coffee. In this secluded alleyway in historic Lancaster we stopped for coffee and to enjoy the sun. We were served quickly by very friendly staff. The food looked great but sadly we didn’t get a chance to stay long. However the coffee was lovely. There are some strong options for coffee in Lancaster as well. The location makes this a really good escape from the Main Street. Highly recommend.

There are coffee shops, there are chain shops and then there are artists. The Music Room, like it's bigger sister The Hall and parent Atkinsons Coffee Merchants are certainly in the artists category.

The phrase artisan has become sullied in recent years and seem almost to have been synonymised to mean home made or rustic. Atkinsons Coffee Quarter in Lancaster are trying to reclaim the term to mean individual, classic, superior and hand made.

There is a lot of love in the coffee that is served here. Do not expect a bucket of milk in 3 sizes with slightly burned beans, the coffee served here comes in a small cup. That's not espresso that's the Latte as well. Atkinsons don't believe in bitter brews weakened with over-consumption of dairy, it's probably why both of their coffee shops are award winning premises.

The location of the Music room is a secluded area of the city called Sun square, aptly named as it get the sun most of the day. The building is a work of art and the music a tuneful blend of classic blues and jazz played gently to complement and not interrupt speech.

This will not be to everyone's taste as the coffee is strong in both flavour and style, but they have a range of exciting beans that pass through the shop on a passive rotation. Come for the ambience, the flavours and the experience of baristas who are trained in making quality...
