Fantastic pastries.
Rough Hand Made is a bakery which also sells coffee and other hot drinks, such as their signature âHot Velvet Chocolateâ.
Rough Hand Made is located at the Albert Docks, roughly 15-20 minutes from Lime Street Station by foot and the closest entry to this side of the Docks is the entrance by the Beatles Museum.
A friend had recommended me to try this bakery after having visited a few times so I decided to take the plunge.
The first thing to note is that there isnât much seating (considering how busy the store gets) and there are only low tables so donât expect to stay here long and be doing productive work with your laptop. There are also two outdoor benches opposite each side of the front entrance.
I actually visited twice in one week because I enjoyed my first visit so much - once on a Monday afternoon and second time on a Sunday Morning. On my first visit on Monday afternoon, I arrived at approximately 2pm and it was relatively quiet (see my photo for reference). I ordered the âwhite chocolate croissantâ and their popular âcream cheese & blueberriesâ, both costing ÂŁ3.65 each. Most of the pastries were still available at this time. On my second visit on Sunday morning, I arrived at approximately 10:30am and it extremely busy with a long queue which reached the front entrance (see my photo for reference). I ordered the âbutter croissantâ which costed ÂŁ2.35, the âcream cheese & blueberriesâ again and the âhot velvet chocolateâ which costed ÂŁ3.25.
The âwhite chocolate croissantâ was my first taste of their pastries and my goodness it was such a delight. Firstly, the croissant is large and would definitely suffice for one person to have a full stomach after eating it. The croissant itself was a masterpiece, lightly crispy on the outside and beautifully fluffy on the inside. I might even go as far as saying it was the best croissant I have tasted so far in my life. The white chocolate was a sweet addition to the croissant and the it tasted lovely but I found myself getting quite sickly after eating so much white chocolate in one sitting - I found myself coming back on Sunday morning ordering a regular butter croissant instead which was perfect.
The popular âcream cheese with blueberriesâ was the pastry I was so eager to taste. I had savoured it to eat later during that day as the white chocolate croissant filled my stomach. This pastry was crispy, similar to the texture of a turnover pastry but a little softer. The inside was filled with the cream cheese and blueberry filling and it was another great experience. The crispiness and the soft texture of the layers and filling inside balanced well and the cream cheese & blueberry flavour was tasty. Again, this pastry alone would be enough to fill a personâs stomach. I loved this pastry so much I came back on Sunday morning and ordered it again!
The âhot velvet chocolateâ is their signature hot drink which consists of rich chocolate flakes melted by the addition of warm frothy milk. The drink tastes much better than a normal hot chocolate because of the richness of the milk chocolate. A lovely drink on a cold morning. I would be tempted to order this drink again but I would like to try their coffee next time.
Overall, I would highly recommend this boutique bakery. There arenât many bakeries let alone of this quality in the city centre, itâs definitely worth the trip if youâre out and about. The croissants are amazing as is the cream cheese & blueberries. The were only two slight downsides I could think of: firstly, that the seating area could have a better layout to fit more customers but I also understand that they want customers to takeout as the store can get very busy. Secondly, the store closes at 4pm which is early to me but it is also understandable as they open early at 7:30am weekdays and 8:30am on weekends. Despite these small downsides, this bakery is my current favourite...
Read moreROUGH TIMES AT ROUGH BAKERY. Dreadful conduct and unprofessional attitude of employee at noon 3/4/23. Appalling customer service from the old woman on the till with grey/dark hair and glasses - my friend is partially deaf and has extreme social anxiety and asked on my behalf if they did a salted caramel croissant (a friend had recommended I try this one and I couldnât identify it on the self-serve counter). The old woman was incredibly rude and argumentative with my friend and barked, âWE DONâT DO SALTED CARAMEL.â When he asked about caramel croissants she continue to be confrontational and carried on snapping âWEâVE NEVER DONE SALTED CARAMEL!â I overheard the way this member of staff was acting towards my friend as he turned to me in distress, I intervened and explained someone had recommended to try the caramel croissant, I thought they had said it was salted but I just basically meant caramel croissant - it didnât take a genius to understand that we just wanted to know which croissant was the caramel one. But this strange woman seemed determined to be rude and turned a normal interaction in a cafe into a quarrel. She ignored me and then repeated the same thing that she had said to my friend and acted perplexed as if we were asking her something abnormally strange. She eventually barked, âhave we not got any dulce de leche?â Unfortunately my Spanish isnât the greatest so I didnât realise this meant caramel. I said ok thank you, she then said âdo you not one?!â Again very argumentative as I was about to walk back over to the counter to get one, I said yes thank you and ignored her as she carried on barking about salted caramel⌠When I returned to the till she avoided eye contact although she wasnât serving anyone so I slowly approached the till (cautiously as I didnât want to be reprimanded for maybe standing in the wrong place ?! Who knows what else this woman would have found a problem with) she then asked me if I wanted it wrapped I replied, no itâs ok thank you Iâm going to eat it right now, she then sarcastically repeated âyou donât want it wrapped!?â Her condescending tone reminded us both of a teacher who looks for any excuse to berate a student for no reason whatsoever. We left and will not be returning. My friend very rarely interacts with anyone out in public as he gets so nervous and this one encounter really upset him. We feel sorry for her colleagues as she must...
