My parents and I visited Escape Hunt in Liverpool and chose the 'Alice in Puzzleland' room which as you can likely guess is Alice in Wonderland themed.
Prior to entering, our hostess - Dagna - who was fantastic throughout, explained the premise and what was needed if we needed assistance or to exit the room at an any time. We were given the option of Alice in Wonderland themed hats to wear which added to the experience, although due to the pressure and concentration in the room were taken off at regular intervals. My advice would to take one for a bit of a laugh and because it looks great on the picture afterwards (phones are not allowed into the escape room itself) but don't feel obliged to wear it for the entire time.
On entering and beginning we were told of the storyline over a tannoy, and what we needed to do to 'escape'. Conscious of the time (there was an hour to achieve this) we started like a whirlwind, myself checking everything in the room reactions when being moved, pulled or probed and my parents observing the room itself for clues.
Dagna was brilliant, speaking over the tannoy in a disguised voice with hints and suggestions and applying sound effects, particularly when something that would help us had been done.
I will not give anything away but broadly speaking one aspect had to be completed to get you closer to achieving the overall goal to move onto the next part, and things that you may have thought as immaterial when later combined with other things you had 'found' or uncovered proved to be invaluable.
We had such a laugh, particularly when due to Dagna misunderstanding my accent 'baking' was heard as 'bacon'. As a vegan myself I can assure all of the animal lovers and plant-based eaters out there that there is nothing bacon related in the room. This minor incident only added to the humour of all of us, although we did lose out on a bit of time due to the laughter!
As you can imagine, there are different kinds of thinking and thought processes required to complete the room and achieving each goal is so satisfying, topped off by the sound effects which were played and then craved once we had gotten used to it.
My recommendation would be to go with people who think differently to yourself and to not be afraid to ring the bell (which your host will leave in the room) for a clue to be given, as without these clues we would have still been in the room days later.
The clues given are not obvious, which would completely ruin the idea of the escape room, but are cryptic with enough to go on and lead you in the right direction (particularly if, as I mentioned, you are with 'different thinkers').
I honestly can't wait to go back and try another of the rooms and I am trying to take more of the family next time, not just as it will make solving the riddles that bit easier but because everyone has such a laugh.
The staff are wonderful at what they do, the rooms are fantastically decorated and the company has got the props down to a t. This combined with the competitive pricing along with the multiple locations through the UK mean my next escape room will without a doubt be with...
Read moreSuch a great experience. You get buzzed into the door and do have to go up stairs to get to the waiting area which is a little cosy. However, they have made good use of the area with tables and seating provided. There is also a bar where you can get a drink and a few tabletop games to keep you amused whilst you wait. The event rooms can be a little claustrophobic feeling due to a combination of the size of the rooms and how much is in them. However, if you are okay with that, it is a benefit as it gives you more puzzles (which are also suitable for children of approximately 8yrs and over to be able to join in with) to solve giving a better game experience. Unlike other escape rooms I have been to we didn't actually get locked in for the duration and we were told we could exit the room whenever we needed if we wanted to go to the toilet etc. The staff were very friendly and joked along with us getting into character of somebody you would expect to see in the room we chose. At the end there were a few novelty props for us to use to take our victory photo hats/headbands etc. which was s nice little extra touch. We would...
Read moreThe experience was great for the children, but the customer service was very poor - we are a small secondary school group and were initially turned away when we went to the Liverpool branch by the manager Natalie as she said that she “obviously couldn’t run two escape rooms on her own” because they it was just her, and that she couldn’t take payment via card at the venue anyway AND she couldn’t access the secondary school discount and that head office was closed. I put forward a complaint, and got a call back from Elsa at Head Office who said that we COULD have a session with two escape rooms and that they COULD take payment via card via card at the venue. When I arrived, the lady Natalie gave me a bit of an attitude and my other staff member heard her make a comment to other attendees calling us a “difficult group booking” but was very pleasant with the children ultimately. If you can muster enough resilience to get passed the negative disposition and cold reception of the venue staff, then it is an awesome experience for...
