Visited for a birthday meal and I must say I was a little disappointed.
We arrived a little early and waited for our table. The music was pumping and the bar area looked lovely. Really got you in the mood and I was expecting a good evening. We had booked in for the bottomless brunch so would have 1.5 hours of unlimited drinks. This is were the problems started.
The tables in the brunch area are well spaced out so you are not on top of each other whilst eating. We were assigned a waiter and was told he would serve us drinks. Our first drinks took around 20 minutes to arrive. When it did arrive we ordered vodka and coke, there was no vodka at all In the drink. I thought they might have it mixed as we also ordered a diet coke. However with each replacement there was still no coke even after telling the waiter that there was still no vodka! Even the house special rum was lemon and again tasted of no alcohol. The only one that might have had some in was the pink gin.
Once we were all seated we ordered food. There is an option on the menu for steak that many of us wanted. When ordering we were told we could not order the steak how we wanted it and it was only available medium rare. We asked why and was told "if we have a table of 20 they all need to come out together so we only do medium rare" just put the steak on at different time? The burger was lovely and really juicy. The chips didn't have any flavour on them. We asked for mayonnaise and were charged for each individual sauce. Also some people stayed with the steak and were asked what sauce they wanted on top, we had a blue cheese and a peppercorn and were charged again extra for these sauces even through its part of the dish!
During our time there the service felt really slow as each time a drink came out there was no alcohol in them so we had to ask for it to be replaced. It was a disappointing service for a highly rated restaurant.
At the end, the bill arrived and there was a large service charge included on the bill. I am happy to tip when it is deserved but with this service I believe the amount automatically added on the end was far too high.
Pros. Good music. Nice burger Good space between tables Allowed one final round at the end of the time
Cons No alcohol in alcoholic drinks Could not have steak how I wanted Larger service fee at end Slow service with drinks Charges for individual sauce, even...
Read moreDon't try the scouse! The service we had was very good. Otherwise the place is overpriced and kind of soulless but you expect that at the Albert Dock and I don't hold it against them. What I cannot forgive them for is the outrageous monstrosity they have the cheek to call scouse. I know there's no official recipe and everyone's mum's scouse is the best but this concoction just takes the mickey! Scouse is meant to be a stew, right? Everyone's mum can agree on that much. Ingredients simmered together for a very long time and ideally eaten the day after it was cooked. This stuff seemed to consist of pre cooked components that only made each other's acquaintance a couple of minutes before when they were doused in thick gravy and served up. But the biggest slap in the face was the potato. I got half a large boiled potato, skin on, plonked in the middle of the shallow bowl. They'd not even bothered to dice it and pretend it had ever been part of a stew. Words can not express how just plain rude that is! Don't get me wrong, lt was perfectly edible and worth a fiver of anyone's money (shame it cost many times more than that) but it was definitely not anything like scouse.
Such a shame because PanAm's location in the Albert Dock means this will be the first and (if they have any sense) last time many many visitors to our city taste our iconic scran. The scouse there is nothing short of...
Read moreI ate here years ago and found the food delicious but overpriced for very tiny portions.
I have been twice this summer and can say things have definitely changed. Portion sizes are generous and reasonably priced for a bar of the smarter variety. The food is still good quality, although I was concerned that there didn't seem be much choice for my vegetarian friend.
The staff have been incredibly friendly and very helpful, not to mention very knowledgeable about the drinks selection available.
Speaking of drinks, I was mildly disappointed by the limited selection of cider. Strongbow is what I might drink on the day before payday, when I'm a bit skint, and only if there's nobody around who knows me. The only alternatives were bottled "ciders" with varies sweet fruit concoctions added to them. As a cider drinker, I would welcome a broader range of good quality ciders, particularly of the drier sort.
That said, I was more than pacified by the availability of a very good range of gins at affordable prices.
The decor is very attractive and soothing, without garish colours or lighting. The semi-enclosed tables and booths of varying sizes allow for a degree of privacy while diners can still feel part of the bigger atmosphere.
All in all, the Pan-American Bar is a bad place for small or larger groups to have relaxed fun for add long as they want, and I'll certainly...
