I had been given an extra £10 so I thought I might visit a bit of history - All Bar One Sutton, the first branch in the country and (to this day) my nearest branch. Sadly I am not cultured enough to order anything other than breakfast.
The Full English, which I had, contains sausage, eggs (fried, scrambled or coddled if my mind serves me correctly), bacon, beans, tomato and mushroom. For a bit extra, a potato hash can be added which to my mind no breakfast is complete without. This breakfast, according to one of the members of staff, is available until 12pm Monday-Saturday and until 4pm Sunday.
At £7.50 + £2, this is the most expensive breakfast I've ever had. It is also the best; they do actually ask how you want your eggs cooked and their scrambled eggs are just lovely; light and fluffy, the way they should be. Unlike most conventional breakfasts, rather than containing several assorted bits of vegetable, they have half a large one on the plate (again - not cultured enough to know what type other than not out of a can), so half a tomato, half a large mushroom (not on the tomato, obviously - the Food Standards Agency would have a field day!). Frugal but flavoursome - lovely and warming, with the juices running down your throat and allowing access for the 'body' to drop straight down. Lovely!
The sausage - ah, my favourite bit. (I'm a teenager.) Big and juicy and brown, this particular sausage was full of meat fit for chewing on, and cooked to perfection. The sausage as part of a breakfast really is the "centerfold" of the breakfast, and had a little hole at one end where it had been cut - lovely!
Moving on to the bacon. It is very easy to overdo bacon, either by adding too much condiments to it or through overcooking. The chef, on this occasion, neglected to do so and thus came out with a number of rashers which were just right, with a light, flavourful crispiness to it.
The beans are very difficult to do anything with - they're beans, there's very little to them. These beans had a tasty balance about it - not too much beans, not too much tomatoes. One thing I would have done to them - and this is from incessant residence of sub-pub cafes - is added something to increase flavour. A hint of grated cheddar would have done no harm whatsoever.
Now, on to the hash. (I sound like a drug dealer.) What this is, is about a dozen 'cubes' of potato in a separate, metal, dish with some spinach leaves on it to taste. These potatoes had some sort of spices on them, which while they did not overpower the dish, they did bring out all of the flavour of them, making for some actually too tasty potatoes for my smartprice tongue. The spinach works well as some additional flavour though I suspect this may be for presentation, as they added nothing to the dish itself and I do not eat with my eyes. (I don't know how middle-class people eat but clearly not my way.)
All in all, as a treat, an All Bar One breakfast offers very good value for money and functions very well as a treat for me. That said, do only consume as a treat and not as a weekly regimen - having this every week will set you back almost £500 every year! Consider having as an end-of-exams treat, or a...
Read moreVisited All Bar One in Sutton on Sunday afternoon on two occasions, with the first being earlier on as a stop by for coffee in between doing some shopping in the town as the bar is well positioned for travel to the area and for the shops.
Being quiet earlier on, I easily found a table and ordered a white americano paying through the app. Was brought to the table quickly by server and with a smile. There was some confusion on the order where the app options are espresso or decaf - the order came with an additional espresso and extra shot of chocolate. Error in my favour, so all is fine.
Returned later on for the drag bingo evening, which table was booked in advance through the website.
Booking was quick, but had a barrage of reminder emails on the weeks leadings up to the event pushing to pre-order and unless look closely can see small bookings dont need to pre-order all the food - there is no way to turn these off as only option is to complete the pre-order to stop the reminders. In future, will tag these to go straight to the spam folder.
The table was ready for the 5pm booking, and ordered drinks at both the bar and by the friendly staff throughout the visit. No problem with the drinks orders, and service was quick and attentive throughout.
Food: Had the Chicken Maki bowl, with added bacon during the evening visit. Unfortunately, the food quality was quite poor and did not enjoy it.
I've had this same dish at other bars and until now haven't had one with any reason to rate as bad. Underneath the top layer where the chicken and bacon was - there was a smaller portion of rice but low score because it was nearly all sliced cabbage under the chicken, making it just dry, little taste and crunchy. Improvement needs to be given to the food.
The free drag bingo entertainment was okay. Took a very long time to get started, and ended bang on 7pm. A busy and excited atmosphere as can be seen on the photos. There are more of these events both here and at Wimbledon's All Bar One, so more opportunities for anyone who missed this one.
Rating overall is a 3* due to the food, and the nag messages being received throughout the build up to the event that...
Read moreCame here for the first time in 3 years (due to the pandemic). We came for my partner's birthday and had dinner. We were served by a young man who was extremely friendly and polite, with prompt service. The lychee daiquiri was a dream, a bit strong, just the way I like it! We had the 5 small plates for around 30 pounds to start off with, (fried mushrooms, duck gyoza, karaage chicken x 2 & chicken skewers) we absolutely loved the chicken skewers, the mushrooms and the karaage chicken! They were just the right size and were extremely moreish! We each had a main as well, (butternut squash plus other things I forget superbowl with added chicken breast, chicken katsu burger, beef brisket burger with cheese and beef brisket without cheese burger. The katsu burger was okay, a good amount of chicken and the breadcrumb coating was lovely; the sauce was okay, I feel that perhaps it didn't quite work as a burger, but was nice nonetheless. The other two burgers were very nice and the balance of meat and other fillings wes just right. (The burgers are big by the way!) (I forgot to take pictures of the foods ordered) the superbowl was lovely as well, was not really to my personal taste, however my partner loved it. The atmosphere and decor are smart and calming with an air of sophistication. I liked the plant decor and the teal and gold colours. We came here originally 3 years ago for lunch and then a few months later they refurbished the place and this is what we have now. Very nice. Always recommend All Bar One's food, as it's a hidden gem I believe! (Photos show our drinks (white wine, tap water, 2 lychee daiquiris and orange & lemonade mixed), also shown are images of special cocktail covers and serving equipment (by Hendricks Gin) on the side, they looked so cool so I took...
