I stayed at The Rag for seven nights as a reciprocal member of another club.

I was in London partly on business and partly there to attend a couple of social events. Being fortunate enough to stay in an oasis of calm like the Army and Navy club was a far better option than being in a hotel.

It's a traditional but very friendly club with a fine dining restaurant and two very good bars, as well as a beautiful library. Comfortable bedrooms as well

I ate there a couple of times. This included a bar meal and an excellent dinner in the restaurant overlooking St James Square.

Each evening on my return to the club it became my habit to stop off in the downstairs bar, where the very professional and friendly barman quickly got to know me and anticipate my usual drink.

The Rag became a home from home for me amidst the...

Yes. I have been to this excellent club many times and have never had a disappointing experience and have always given it an upvote/5 star rating on Google. I walked past it the other day and Google wants me to give it a rating! The problem is that I only have two options: One is to give it a rating for walking past, which is obviously completely daft, although it looked as smart as always, the other is to tick the box which says "did not go there" which is true (I dined at the East India Club that night (excellent roast beef!) But if I tick that box, Google informs me that it will delete all the other (excelkent) reviews I have previously written! There is something about the geeks in Silicon Valley and their algorithms which makes me wonder about their relationship...

Had a good event here, Guinea Fowl for starter, twas immaculate. Then the Lamb which was to die for. The building is beautiful and the bar..well, they only had one fellow on, which for a function, surprised me. They didn’t cash, which was awkward for me when I went to buy a round and another lady had to step in, and the other thing was the G&T only came in doubles - not that I was driving. But even so. Finally, I think a goldfish type bowl would perhaps have been classier than the standard straight tumbler ala Wilko. These are only little things but as I’m writing a review, felt they were worth mentioning. The food was unbeatable and they were very good at the table and the wine was perfect and free...

I had a pleasure of staying overnight in this very traditional establishment and it was what I hoped it to be - a night in a comfortable room surrounded by history frozen in paintings, sculptures, plaques and the general 'Britishness'. A whiff of imperial past lives in the Rag but without being offensive - it's really worth a visit if one has an opportunity! The room had a proper key and keyring (rarity!) Throughout the hotel quarters one stumbles upon 'gentlemanly' facilities, like an old electric shoe polisher. Minus one star for absolutely no plant-based options for breakfast, which is rather quite disappointing seeing how easy it is to provide plant replacements without removing the traditional veneer of the place.

The RAG Club is one of those venerable institutions that's been a fixture of Pall Mall since time immemorial. Fortunately it has moved with the times and is very welcoming to non-members so long as you wear a jacket in the member's bar and put any bags in the quite lavish cloakroom. I attended for a business meeting in the Library and this was more than adequate. The room was spacious and comfortable. It also effortlessly gave you that sense of history, service and a certain calm that comes with being comfortably insulated from the world outside. A nice experience.
