Chutney Mary London has been featured in the Michelin Guide and has been awarded the AA restaurant of the year award in 2023/24 along with 3 AA Rosettes Award for their culinary excellence.
The interiors were stunning. The candlelight spaces with the dark wood and soft leather really creates this intimate luxurious setting especially as the low light bounces around the glasswares. It truly brought the classic luxury feels in.
We had the following: Starters Tandoori Artichoke Hearts - £15.50 Baked Venison Samosa - £17 . For Mains Tandoori Lamb Chops - £42 Wild Venison Roghan Josh - £37 Lamb Biryani - £37 Naan - £4.85 . Desserts - Carrot Halwa Souffle with Pistachio Kulfi - £15 Gulab Jamun Tiramisu with Gold Leaf - £12 . The starters were absolutely top notch. The tandoori artichoke hearts were so flavourful. It had a slight tangy taste which was lovely. Couldn’t recommend more to try the baked venison samosas. It was so tender and packed with juicy flavour, it was amazing. I would go back just for that alone. . The mains didn’t hold back either. The tandoori lamb chops and venison Roghan josh were extremely savoury and delicious especially when paired with the garlic naan and lamb biryani. It definitely took it to the next level. . The desserts were so unique and exotic I loved it all especially their creative take on carrots and Souffle. Also the gold leaf was a nice touch and made what a luxurious night already even more classier. . This is definitely worth it in my books especially for special occasions. Add it to your list for sure! . Location: 73 St James’s St, St. James’s, London SW1A 1PH Nearest Tube Station: Green Park Station Price - ££££ Requirements - Gluten Free, Vegan options available . Read moreDo not go here if you are a group of young women, they will not take you seriously. A rushed experience with poor service and average, overpriced food… not fine dining.
Our party of three went to Chutney Mary yesterday (Saturday 27 January) for dinner. My friend booked it for her 25th birthday and we had high expectations for what we thought would be a quality experience but turned out to be very average food with poor (verging on rude) service.
I was ignored when I sat for ages without a menu. When my friends arrived, the waiter asked if we were ready to order, and we politely asked for two more minutes. He then got the manager to come to our table and tell us we had to order immediately because they wanted the table back at 9:15pm. Whilst I totally understand tables need to be cleared for other reservations, the manner in which this was done was distasteful and set a negative tone for the rest of the evening, as we felt rushed and as if their eyes were constantly on us. This is not what one expects from a fine dining restaurant where you should feel welcomed and relaxed, particularly as you are spending so much money.
The lamb kebab is not a kebab. It’s just two overpriced pieces of lamb (ie not minced meat). Our two other starters - the paneer and chaat - were tasty. But you can get the same at any other Indian restaurant at a far more reasonable price. The dal makhani was nice, but we soon realised that it was FULL of oil. Whole puddles of oil on our plates. You’re better off going to Dishoom.
We informed the restaurant it was our friend’s birthday. They kindly brought some chocolate ice cream for her, but the surprise was very much tampered by the fact that the waiter miserably lit the dessert at the table in front of her.
We ordered masala tea to finish the evening. After 10 minutes, the manager told us there is none left because another party of 30 had consumed it all. We knew this was a bid to get rid of us so they could have the table back. The manager did not offer us anything else complimentary, knowing it’s a birthday celebration and we were visibly disappointed. A month ago we went to Gymkhana and we were given a free starter as an apology for something not being on the menu - that is real customer service.
The bill was put on our table and we were pressured to leave. As three young Indian women, we felt consistently sidelined and not taken seriously. Very...
Read moreTo start with if you knew me - I have a penchant for impeccable service, luxury and flavors and for me to give 10/10 is a rarity. Our experience was 10/10.
The impeccable personable service, the incredible food, the perfect ambience that was not an art gallery like some fancy places I have been to, it was just the right balance of high end and yet a dinner place. The lighting and oh did I mention the food! Their rice, whether the basic rice that came with the tandoori lobsters or the rice in their prawn biryani was literally the best fluffed up, flavorful, aromatic rice I have had in my life.
I make really good rice and thought I was unbeatable! Well, now I have a new challenge on hand!! The shrimp texture was perfect. Both the lobster dishes my husband had he said the lobster was perfectly buttery.
and oh I must not forget the incredible balance of the tori chaat. Desert was good too and my husband didn't specifically ask them for a cake for my birthday but were they going to forget that - Nope! I got a beautiful slice of cake with the words Happy Birthday written in cursive.
A night to remember. Our London holiday was a birthday trip for me and Chutney Mary surely made it perfect. We have now decided to visit London more often (from the US) just for Chutney Mary. Guys, you'll deserve subsidies from the tourism board!!
Thank you all.
Edited to add - Our main server was Raveena and someone took an additional order of biryani and naan in between. They let us know that the biryani would take time, however it seems they decided to wait on the naan too. When we waited for a bit and followed up, Raveena actually took it personally and was almost upset that our naan was delayed and she went in and got it herself
