The statues of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, stand as remarkable tributes to their enduring legacy in British history. Located in London, these statues honor their leadership during a transformative period for the United Kingdom. King George VI, originally not destined for the throne, ascended as monarch in 1936 after his brother, King Edward VIII, abdicated to marry Wallis Simpson. His reign was marked by steadfast leadership through World War II, during which he became a symbol of resilience and unity for the British people.

Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, played a crucial role in supporting both her husband and the nation during these turbulent years. Her unwavering public presence and morale-boosting efforts made her a beloved figure. Even after King George VI’s passing in 1952, she remained a respected royal figure for decades.

As grandparents of the current monarch, King Charles III, their influence is still felt today. The statues serve as a powerful reminder of their dedication, sacrifice, and service to the nation. Visitors and history enthusiasts alike continue to admire these sculptures, reflecting on a pivotal period in British history shaped by their leadership and commitment...

This elegant memorial to King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, is a hidden gem nestled just off The Mall, near Carlton Gardens. If you’re heading to or from Buckingham Palace, it’s well worth a short detour.

Unveiled in 2009, the memorial features two beautifully detailed bronze statues, standing side by side as they were so often seen during the dark days of WWII. King George VI is depicted in full naval uniform, looking calm and steadfast—a quiet reminder of his leadership during Britain’s most difficult hours. The Queen Mother stands nearby, graceful and warm, capturing the enduring affection she inspired during her long life.

The memorial is surrounded by neat gardens and framed by the elegant architecture of the area. It’s part of a wider tribute to national resilience, placed fittingly near other historic landmarks like the statues at Waterloo Place and the nearby Royal Society.

It’s a peaceful, reflective spot—a great place to stop, learn, and appreciate two figures who guided the country with strength and dignity. Don’t rush past—give this memorial a moment of your time.

Tip: There’s a lovely view looking back down The Mall—perfect...

The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Memorial, is a memorial to King George VI and his consort, Queen Elizabeth. This was completed in 2009, the memorial incorporates an earlier, Grade II-listed statue of George VI by William McMillan. This was unveiled by his daughter Queen Elizabeth II in 1955. This memorial which has been reconfigured, includes a statue of the Queen Mother by Philip Jackson, a relief sculpture by Paul Day an architectural setting by Donald Buttress and Donald Insall, was unveiled by Elizabeth II in 2009. This is a marvellous monument very well sculpted in to the landscape and maintained by the Royal Parks and English Heritage and is a Grade II listed...

해당 평가는 한국어와 빈약한 영어로 작성되었습니다. This review written by Korean and poor English. Statues honoring George VI and his wife Elizabeth (Queen Mother) famous for the movie 'Kings Speech'. George VI inherited an undesired kingship in 1936 when his brother Edward VIII suddenly stepped down from the crown. He ruled over the Second World War and the post-war British Commonwealth. An anecdote that almost died while at the Buckingham Palace during the German air raids details his love for the people. I didn't watch the movie, but I look into the life of George VI and wonder why the people had to love him. Although not well known, it is definitely worth a visit with Waterloo Gardens.
