I was able to enjoy a nice pint conveniently right after my train. The big platter of fish and chips was amazing and just what I needed with my beer. The extraordinary team members here deserve special recognition. Their warm and friendly demeanour instantly made me feel at ease, and their attentive service throughout the meal was nothing short of exceptional. Read moreAfter a poor experience on Monday 10th July, I contacted you directly by email. You have not responded. As you seem to reply to reviews left on google, I have no choice but to post my review publicly.
My wife and I dined with you today at around 1430. We chose to eat in the dining room as we have previously really enjoyed the experience. Today was very disappointing.
After we were seated the waiter explained that there was no pork chops or lamb rump available. Although we wanted the pork we chose to remain and my wife had the sausage and mash and I opted for the chicken and leek pie. As we were not working today, we also ordered a bottle of Viognier, which was excellent.
The food arrived within an acceptable time but when I cut into my pie, it was completely cold in the middle. My wife’s sausage and mash was fine. I explained the problem to the waiter who was very helpful. He took my food away and then came back and said it would be 25 minutes for a replacement meal. We didn’t have this amount of time available as we had a train to catch. He offered a complimentary portion of chips to ensure that I at least got some food. The pie was removed from the bill and also the chips were complimentary.
Whilst the waiter did his best, it was still a poor experience. The Wine was excellent and was priced around £36. I wouldn’t normally order this if I was just having a portion of chips for lunch. Your poor service ruined my lunchtime experience and the total cost to you was a free portion of chips. Please be assured that although a nice gesture, this did not fully resolve my issue.
I hope that you will appreciate that I haven’t done what most people would do and left you a poor public review. I have eaten at the Betjeman many times in the past and it has been very good. I trust that you will make every effort to return to your previous...
Read moreAs always, the Betjeman Arms did not disappoint. A lovely, buzzy atmosphere, clean tables and a delicious breakfast. The food here is far far superior to the usual boring grub offered in many railway stations (and airports). However, the thing that makes the pub stand out is the lovely staff and I want to particularly give a shout out to Britney.
Britney served my partner and me last time we came here and I was very pleased to see her again because it's nice to see a familiar face in a setting where the usual state of affairs would be fast turnover of staff.
When we ate here before, Britney had had to handle the tricky situation of asking us to change tables because a large party was booking in to the back dining room. She did this with real grace and professionalism which continued while she took our order for food and drinks. She had gone off shift by the time we left and I should have made the effort to comment on here then.
The reason I am doing this now is because of an earlier unkind comment about her in another review. Members of staff here are just that and they do not have a final say over what tables are free for the public to use or not. The back dining room is currently closed as I write and, I'm assuming, would remain closed even if the bar, snug and station front dining area were heaving due to staffing levels (both front-of-house and in the kitchen), prior bookings, and management choice. Please do not bully or be mean to the young people working in this place. They are all working hard to make coming here a sweet experience but sometimes members of the public have to look beyond or set aside their expectations or even just give staff a moment to explain.
Thank you, Britney and all your lovely colleagues for making me feel welcome, looking after me and cooking me a fab...
