Great service, good prices, and a delicious Serbian barbecue experience with mostly authentic aspects, but a few unfortunate problems for the stickler immigrant seeking a true taste of home. I happily recommend this restaurant to the uninitiated that want to try a taste of Serbian food.
I ordered a 5-piece ćevapi with the shredded cabbage side (kupus salata). The main came with a portion of fresh, tasty french fries, a small bowl of diced white onion and a small bowl of barbecue sauce (a fairly inauthentic side, but fine).
I have no complaints for the ćevapi, which tasted authentic, fresh and delicious. The cabbage salad is served in a portion generous enough for a minimum of at least two people to eat comfortably, which is quite authentic to restaurants at home.
For dessert I ordered the walnut baklava, which came in a large portion, delicious and drenched in syrup, along with a scaldingly hot cup of Turkish-style coffee.
The reason I can't give this 5 stars is because the bread brought to the table tasted nothing like any good lepinja or somun I've ever eaten. I'll grant that it was fresh, but it was cheddary, cold and dense rather than the toasted warm and chewy kind you'd get in Serbia or Bosnia.
If there had been a great, authentic table bread, or the ćevapi had been served in a fresh and toasty lepinja like is often done in Serbia, I could give this 5 stars. If this changes, this will become my absolute favourite place in London to eat Serbian barbecue when I'm feeling homesick.
Nonetheless, I will be back in good time to try the pljeskavica, Karadjordjeva šnicla and other...
Read moreWe visited Cafe & Restaurant Kod Pirketa, and overall, our experience was a mix of highlights and a few letdowns.
The food was okay, with the clear standout being the “pasulj”, which was absolutely delicious… rich in flavor and perfectly cooked. It was definitely the best dish we tried and left a strong impression. The roasted peppers and cabbage salad were also excellent… fresh, well-seasoned, and a great complement to the meal.
However, the “cevapi” didn’t quite live up to the standard we’ve experienced at other places. They lacked the signature taste and texture we were hoping for, which was a bit disappointing.
One interesting detail is that they don’t serve the traditional “lepinja”, which some might expect, but instead offer their own house-made bread. While it’s not what we were anticipating, the bread itself was very tasty and clearly made with care.
Overall, Cafe & Restaurant Kod Pirketa has some dishes that truly shine, especially the “pasulj”, and the homemade bread is a nice touch. With a bit more consistency across the menu, it could be...
