REVIEW UPDATED 16/8/2024
Original Review: Charles and his team are doing something really special here, with all natural homemade ingredients.
This place deserves a lot more customers. It's a little hidden away at the end of Gabriel's Wharf but what a gem!
The tofish and chips is award-winning for a reason: It's properly delicious. Also, you'd be hard pushed to find better cocktail classics than those made here. We had a mojito and a passionfruit martini and everything tasted so fresh, without a hint of processed or pre-prepared syrups that make a lot of cocktails either too sweet or too watery.
UPDATE 16/8/2024: Popped here to get some drinks with a friend. Service was really poor (and the place wasn't full).
Took a while to get menus (had to ask for them), ordered drinks. When they arrived, the prosecco rosé was wrong (they brought us a regular rosé wine).
When we mentioned it, the server told us they didn't have any prosecco rosé. I asked another member of staff as I could see the bottle behind the bar and he replaced it. Throughout this, communication wasn't great.
Had to ask for the bill two, maybe three times, and that took ages too. When they showed me the bill, they'd charged me £12 for a small non-alcoholic mojito (the same price as the regular mojito). They don't even serve it as a long drink either. £21 for a glass of prosecco, a non-alcoholic mojito and a service charge! When I queried the mojito, both the servers confirmed that Charles was charging £12 for it.
Such a shame as Charles was very welcoming previously, but he hasn't passed on his people skills to his team. And even the bar at restaurants like Sexy Fish don't charge £12 for what is essentially a fancy half glass of juice. The food's still good as far as I know, but after tonight, I'd rather go to Unity Diner, where I can get good vegan food and drinks with consistently good service and...
Read moreSad to have to write this because i want vegan businesses to thrive but this was a very disappointing experience. Firstly i arrived at 11:50 (opening times say open at 11) and was told that they wouldn't be open for another 20 minutes. I said that was fine and i would wait because i wanted to support a vegan business rather than go somewhere else. I was asked for my order at 12:10, which was an oriental grilled chick'n wrap and a green smoothie. I then waited and watched as others that arrived after me ordered much more complicated orders and were served before me. Whilst i was waiting and listening to some music on my headphones - suddenly the speaker next to me blasted out music at a ridiculously loud volume. The food arrived and the tortilla was burnt on the outside but on the whole it was ok. I went to pay and leave quite unhappy with the experience. It then got worse as i was shown a card point of sale without a price displayed, i tapped assuming it would be the correct amount, only to find out i had been charged extra for "service" without ever being asked? I questioned this and was told this was their policy to add this on to every order - i should stress there is no mention of this anywhere, not on the menu, not on the signage, nowhere. I complained and was simply repeated that that was their policy. I think this is unacceptable to add this hidden charge. I won't be visiting this...
Read moreSet inside a charming local square of food stalls and shops this vegan restaurant is a spectacular experience all around. It was a rainy day and our host / proprietor quickly made space for us among the handful of tables under a canopy. There were three of us so we chose to split meals because the variety on the menu was intriguing and we wanted to know about so many dishes. The standout was a buckwheat waffle accompanied by delicately sautéed sweet potato and broccoli with sides of rich black beans and a slightly sweet — in a good way! — red pepper salsa. We were also riveted by the tofish & chips, a vegan riff on the classic. The breading was crisp and delicate. The tofu was wrapped in nori which added a briny bite that brought home the sea. Chips are chips. And theirs are quite good. Finally we had a beetroot salad. It was simple, elegant and perfectly dressed. Added quinoa and seeds packed in the nutrition and it can be a standalone meal for one. Absolutely do not pass up the freshly made juices. We had the green and the orange/carrot. Each was rich, dense yet smooth. Every drop was savored. The food alone makes this a must go. The gracious owner and accompanying chef cannot be missed. The care, kindness and joy that they exude is clearly part of the magic of this food and experience. We are in the UK for only one more week but will certainly eat here again before...
