Tawny Owl is a beautiful converted barn and is spotlessly clean. It is very well resourced and has everything you could possibly need. Despite being a beautiful building, I am only giving 3 stars. Firstly, because it is next to a busy road. This might not affect many people, but I am a fairly light sleeper so I struggled to fall to sleep at night, as the traffic tends to whizz along this main road to Whitby. Also, I was woken up every morning by the traffic noise by 7am.
Another problem we had was the lovely large shower in one of the bathrooms didn't work... there was a smaller shower head which could be used but it didn't go high enough for my very tall son. Consequently we all had to share one shower.
The outdoor area is very limited as there is only a concreted area with a couple of wooden chairs so it wasn't really a great area to sit out in the sun.
The other thing to take note of is the HOT TUB IS SHARED WITH THE OCCUPANTS OF ANOHER BARN, so you need to negotiate when you can go in. One barn has a 9am-5pm slot which isn't a great time and the other barn has 6pm-10pm. As I thought we were in post COVID times I didn't think it would be a problem, but the tub needed to be cleaned between different visitors going in. On our last evening we were unable to use it as we didn't get back to the barn until 7pm and as a new couple was arriving at 8pm, they had already arranged to use the hot tub for the evening which meant we couldn't use it, which was a bit frustrating! However, the hot tub was spacious, relaxing and it had lights!
Also, take note of the early leaving time of 9am (although we were 30mins late) and the late arrival...
Read moreWe loved the location, character of the property and the garden.. There was, upon arrival, a generous starter pack, for the week. There was also, available plenty of cleaning materials, equipment and toilet rolls. We unpacked the car, and re parked in neighbouring street. Very safe area. There were issues of cleaning: not sure if this an isolated incident. There was a face mask, which may have been damp and left behind a bedroom cabinet. The cabinet smelt fusty very strongly, and this had to be 'aired' and left outside the room whilst we were using it. Some of the kitchen tools were not really robust enough to be called 'fit for purpose', but otherwise, it was very well equipped. I thought that the tiles, in both the bathroom (around the sink area) and the kitchen splash back could have been cleaned better. We thoroughly enjoyed our few days away in the area, and would like to return to the property...
