Read moreFranzos in Ilford Lane was, quite frankly, a flavourless fumble masquerading as a peri peri joint. I came in with modest expectations — a quick bite of decent grilled chicken and fries. What I got instead was a crash course in how not to do peri peri. Service was decent with a smile and manager. There's also a birthday every 5 minutes with the annoying music. Attracts a lot of kids and families.
Let’s start with the chicken — the alleged star of the show. While it wasn't technically raw, it was uncomfortably pink, oddly slimy, and had a texture I can only describe as unsettling. The so-called peri peri "coating" was just a slick of sauce slapped on the outside, as if someone had remembered halfway through cooking that flavour was meant to be involved. The marinade hadn't penetrated the chicken at all — it was all surface-level theatrics with zero depth. Think of it as a chicken in costume, playing the role of peri peri but forgetting its lines.
The chips didn’t offer much salvation either — undercooked and anaemic, only just made edible by the dipping sauces (flavoursome), which did all the heavy lifting here. A real shame, considering the wait time was actually pretty quick. Speedy service is great — but only if what follows is worth serving.
After telling staff about our issue, we waited for the manager for around 15 minutes (it was quite busy when we were there). Manager was kind enough to offer replacement meals that was in fact well done and offered alternatives very kindly.
Franzos may look the part with its branding and buzz, but the food felt like it was going through an identity crisis. Is it grilled? Is it basted? Is it edible? Jury’s still out.
If you’re after authentic peri peri with actual flavour inside the chicken, keep walking — Ilford has better options, Afrikana for example, even if you have to go a bit further afield. This was a one-and-done experience, and not even the sauces could rescue it from the depths of...
Read moreIt's worst than a kids playground in here! If you fancy a creche environment in a jungle then this is your place to come to. Absolutely ridiculous atmosphere, the families in here are quite content with having their children run around and scream while they sit and smile. We got seated at the back of the restaurant and were told its noisy because of a private party in the booths to the left however the noise was coming from people in our section shouting across the table and declaring their life stories for everyone in the restaurant to hear. It's the unclassy etiquette of the guests that lets this place down. Then letting their kids go wild running around. On a Friday eve after a long week, don't bother going here for a headache. 3 people in my party felt affected by the constant wailing and big grown men shouting across the table like it was a football match.
We also had children in our group but they sat at the table with manners and didn't go crazy because they're out for the night. The front of the restaurant had a relaxed and calm energy, it's literally like 2 different worlds. We've been here 3-4 times before but the standards have really dropped.
Portions are great but the prices have inflated a little and we waited 40 mins for our food. That's ridiculous. The quality of the food has dropped. The chicken was a bit pink in the middle and despite the coatings being seasoned, the inside of the chicken is bland and boring.
Franzos have gotten way ahead of themselves and have been popping up in various locations however they need to focus on quality. If they didn't offer halal food and weren't a rebore nandos, they'd be dead quiet in my opinion.
Never returning here again. I know what quality is and...
