Obviously, this review should focus on coffee. I can confirm that Fix Coffee sells quite nice coffee. However I can also confirm that the coffee is not of sufficient quality to justify either the price or the attitude of staff. Surly, unfriendly and seemingly baffled by the most basic aspect of the service they were providing (the exchange of money for caffeinated goods) I was left aghast by a staff member who couldn't work the till, or apparently look a customer in the eye. Another, presumably more senior, staff member slowly became involved in the situation, but again failed the eye contact test, and quite frankly the human test too. Perhaps as it was a Saturday morning, they were both very hungover. Perhaps the senior member of staff was trying to expose the stupefying incompetence of the other, behatted member of staff. Perhaps neither should have been working with the public in the first place. Nobody wants fawning, sycophantic staff with a glued on smile, telling you what a great choice you've made when ordering coffee. Chances are you're either tired or hungover, which is why you need the coffee in the first place, and your tolerance for other humans is at a bit of a low point. But there's a fundamental base line that needs to be met to ensure you don't leave feeling like a chump; like perhaps you just took part in a very tawdry and demeaning exchange. If I wanted that, I'd read Femail. In conclusion, if you're willing to pay 40% more than necessary to get a coffee, prioritise a faux rustic hipster aesthetic over basic customer service, and you have ten minutes to spare while they work out how to operate their own equipment, then this is the...
Read moreFix is located where the old Coffee@Whitecross used to be. I'd known of this place for a while, but hadn't been in until today given he presence of some incredibly tough competition in the form of Whitecross St Market being right outside. I really like the place; decor is probably something called industrial chic (or I may have made that up) and the sofas are worn but comfortable. There's an assortment of juices including Vita Coco and Apple & Elderflower available in the fridge, and a variety of delicious-looking sandwiches. I had the roast pumpkin, goat's cheese and rocket on multigrain bread and it was delicious, and made this hungover lass feel all together more human. I didn't try the coffee though, as my regular coffee place is really nearby so can't comment. You can also get free wifi for an hour here by approaching the counter...
Read moreMy friend and I found this café after bumping into each other in early January. It is tucked away in a side street off Old St - we only found it by googling cafés that were still open (it was 6pm on a weekday). FWD:Coffee was open til 7pm, which was perfect as we both had places to be afterwards.
The interior is bright, nicely decorated and modern, with several tables and 3 massive couches with a bench-like coffee table in the middle. The cafe was not heaving at the time but more customers did arrive to drink in after us. We both ordered chai lattes, and oh, the joy of drinking from a china cup and saucer over a takeaway cup! We sat on one of the couches and sipped our lattes, feeling very cosy and comfortable.
The service was friendly and efficient, drinks reasonably priced and the atmosphere was charming. Would recommend and...
