Ever-present Pakistani Cafe that raised their prices years ago to match the changing landscape in the City of London (a mile away). So from being an affordable, somewhat different place of choice, Lahore One tapped into a clientele that dipped deeper into their suited pockets; although many of the reviews here claim it to be 'cheap', look around Whitechapel/Commercial Rd areas and you will find remarkably cheap, honest outfits, some as old as Lahore One. A meal for two at Shalamar House on New Road or Al Hambra on Whitechapel Road will set you back £12-17, the same at Lahore One will forfeit you around £40+. Granted the previous examples are incredibly cheap, but the food is good and does not claim to be anything more than 'cafe fare'. The comparison ends here with Lahore. Lahore, a cafe with restaurant prices considers itself superior enough to charge somewhat more. Chana at £7.50, Kebab rolls £5 or more. Meat Curries £10. Conversely I would add that Lahore One is unique. The taste is quite something. The Chana one of the best in London, the Korai dishes superb. The selection of vegetarian dishes are inventive and accommodating enough for non-meat eaters, the Roti's excellent! Try their King Prawn Masala-deliciously memorable. The Kheer is (for me) superior to anything else in the area. I read complaints that the Biryani is not Biryani? Ask at the counter and you will be informed how they make their Biryani. The truth is that you will leave this restaurant full with the flavours lingering. I become saddened when I read of reviewers who (seemingly) would struggle to discern the difference between a nan and a paratha then proceed to criticise a book that they have read only one page of. My suggestion is that you sit in this place, observe then menu and enjoy the experience. Some reviews complain about rudeness or staff confrontations. This is something I have never experienced. The staff here are patient and courteous and it is definitely a family run outfit. Make no mistake, Lahore One is an absolute glistening jewel in E1. It is cash only with 3 ATM's nearby (hopefully...
Ā Ā Ā Read morevisited the place on 17/11/18. There was 15 of us and a table was book, we had ordered all the food before going to the table as we knew what we wanted. The food portions are small e.g. we ordered Paneer dish and i could count the number of Paneer pieces (8) and one dish was just about enough for one person, rip off when you paying so much money. The gravy was like it was cooked in water. The much hyped kebabs were awful barely cooked and seemed like they weren't fresh, simply cooked earlier in the day and warmed up when we ordered. The second time we ordered them we had to ask the waiter to warm them up extra. Some kebabs it had raw meat so could not even chew, clear indication of lack of cooking.
The biggest issue for us was when we asked for the bill, the waiter came with a small card with Total amount (Ā£258), when we asked him where is the bill he started laughing and asked if this was the first time we visited the place. Anyway we insisted on having a detailed bill to which one was provided after 10min. When we checked the bill we found some discrepancy between what we ordered and what was in the bill, it turned out they added extra plates of 1 extra plate on two different item and couple extra cans of soft drink which we never ordered. We highlighted this to the owner and they wanted to argue with until we showed them the empty cans we had on the table vs what was on the bill only then they accepted.
In short this place is a con both food and money, they take advantage of who come there to eat after few drinks thinking they wont check the bill and its ok to add on extra items to the bill. PLEASE IF YOU DO GO CHECK YOUR BILL VS WHAT YOU...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreHorrible treatment. I was here two nights ago with some work colleagues. Our waiter, a tall, skinny, dark hair with beard guy, was extremely rude.
For medical reasons, I need to avoid garlic and onion for few months and politely asked whether the dish I had ordered contained any of these, and if they could be removed. To what he replied; what are you talking about? you haven't ordered any garlic, so you'll get whatever your dish is.
I took it as a misunderstanding and let it go.
Then, when the bill arrived, we paid by card and the waiter told us that tips or service can only be paid with cash. A friend asked in the table if any of us had cash, and everyone replied no except me, that said maybe I have, but need to check. The waiter then go to attend other tables.
When I checked, there was only a £20 note in my wallet. Which would be more than 33% of the final bill and I wasn't happy with the service. Thus, my reaction was to not leave any tips.
My colleagues got up and left the table while I was getting my things ready. In that moment, the waiter started cleaning up our table. Just before I left, he tapped my shoulder not gently at all, and with an angry face and an aggressive tone, he said: where's the tip? There's no tip. Why not? Your friend said you had cash, give me £5. No, sorry. And quickly turned and started to leave, a bit confused, threatened and upset at the same time. He then muttered something I couldn't here with the noise in the restaurant.
Food was ok. But the experience ruined so much that I would recommend not visiting this...
